Ball Pop - palm padding?

The thread stitching is only on the surface. If you loosen the leather lacing (open the knot on the side and take in some slack) you can pull the slack around to the base of the glove, which allows you to separate the front from the back. I was super-careful not to pull so hard as to bring the end of the leather lacing through its hole. If you're confident in your ability to re-lace the glove, it would probably be a lot easier than what I did. I am not that confident...

Now at 12yo, I'm preparing a JCV34 for her in hopes that it will work well for her this time around, but there's a possibility that I may need to find it a new home if it doesn't.

Eric,

We're in the same boat. I just got my 15yo DD a JCV-34 for Xmas. I've got plenty of time to break it in, but a couple things concern me:

1. The pop outs (thread topic).

2. It's definitely smaller than her current Liberty Advanced mitt.

How often are you conditioning it? It says to condition once but then not again for 2 weeks, but damn this thing is like a piece of concrete.

I have used conditioner in it maybe once a week. Once it's in use, I tend to condition approx. once a month. A big part of my break-in process is to sit on it for 15-ish minutes intervals. I fold it where I want the break line, and sit on it. Fold it again on a slightly different line, and sit on it. Repeat until my butt gets tired (not exactly a comfortable seat). My goal is to break down the entire area from the base of the thumb to the base of the index finger, from the top of the web, to the heel. It's working pretty well. It's also something I can do while sitting at my desk at work. I also do a liberal amount of "shoeshine" movement, pounding with a mallet (lots of focus on the heel and bottom of the web, with some along to top of the web, too), and pounding a ball into the pocket.

I agree that it's a little smaller than the Worth LA mitt.

My 10yo daughter is using a Nokona X2, there's no padding at all, just another thin layer of leather. The padding in her old mitt would bunch up and cause (well help) the ball pop out. The Nokona's are BIG, she likes the added feel and easy to squeeze nature of it.

Just an update on my earlier post about removing some of the stuffing in the base of the Vinci glove --

We bought a second one (after showing up to practice for team 1 while her catcher's mitt was still in the bag for team 2). The newer one had much less stuffing in that portion of the palm, and no surgery was necessary. I guess it's just the vagaries of a hand-made product, YMMV.
