I am in the market for a new set of gear for my 10yr old DD. Does anyone have any experience with this UA gear?

The whole reason I am looking for new gear is because DD took a pitch to the upper chest from a 12yr old and she said it felt like she had no chest protector on at all. After that happened I started reading up on her current gear and it is probably better suited for coach pitch(Easton Natural). Back ground on DD and why i am looking for gear under $200. She hasn't caught since coach pitch. She has been pitching and playing 2B since getting into 10U. About a month ago she asked if she could start catching again. I started working with her in the back yard and after a week or so talked to the HC about getting her in at team practice. She did pretty good so has since been getting some game play behind the plate (pool games mostly). Little Brag she has been pitching really good and has slipped into the #1 spot. With all that being said i want to get her some better gear but do not want to spend tons because I do not know if she will stick with it. In order for her to be a game catcher she would need to stop pitching or atleast pitch less. I dont think she wants to stop pitching. Also does anyone have any experience with their kid wanting to pitch and catch? Were they able to do both competitively?

My DD had to make the decision which position she wanted to concentrate on by the end of second year 12U. Not because I made her, but because of the time constraints involved. Most upper level Pitchers I know work at their craft approximately 4 hours a week (including lessons) and sometimes even more. In order to become an upper level catcher, let alone maintain that level, a catcher has to work just as hard, if not harder than pitchers do. Most of the Catchers I train put in 5 hours plus a week (including a 2 hour weekly clinic) doing drill work. With few exceptions, they train year round with little time off and this is on top of school sports, school clubs such as choir, theater, band, homework and a social life.

As far as gear goes, UA is made by All-Stars if I remember correctly. All-Stars IMO is one of 3 sets I would consider. Another is the Wilson promotion series and I just ordered the Schutt S3.2 gear, their top of the line right now since DD's set just gave up the ghost this past weekend. I paid $230 for the set but that was with the more expensive helmet. Otherwise, you could go the route many of us did (DD had a mixed set before) by mixing and matching but you usually end up spending quite a bit more.

That is exactly what i am talking about. She started pitching lessons June2015. She has pitched for at least 4-5 hours per week including 1 or 2 lessons per week since she started. There is no way she can do both and put the required amount of time in. I guess we will continue doing what we are doing and wait for her to make a decision as to which position she wants to hone in on. I added a couple of catching drills to the end of her pitching work at home.

I will look into the Schutt gear. I take it you do not think the UA gear is the best choice for less than 200 dollar gear?

I think that for just a little more, you can get a top of the line set that offers superior fit, comfort and protection versus pretty much an inexpensive starter set with limited protection.

The UA set is decent, mid-level gear. UA gear is made by All-Star (this is a good thing), but isn't at the level of All-Star's top gear (Vela/System 7). For under $200, the UA set isn't a bad choice.

Right now, Wilson is blowing out all of their fastpitch catcher's gear for 50% off, which is a flat-out steal (https://www.wilson.com/en-us/fastpitch/protective-gear). Wilson's top-level ProMotion gear is excellent, and the second-tier Max-Motion is really good. If you can find the sizes and colors you want, I don't think there is a better value on the market at the moment.

Keep in mind that you can also find the Wilson gear for even less from various online retailers. For example, softballsavings has the ProMotion legs for as low as $52 and the chest for $55 (depending on colors and sizes).

Good to know. A week(ish) ago, the online retailers hadn't dropped their pricing.

Can't seem to find the black helmet anywhere, though. Picked up the chest protector straight from Wilson.

Anybody finds it, please let us know. :)
