Should the knee cup stay in the same position over the knee all the time and should the knee always be "centered" in the knee cup?

As my DD has caught for 5 years, I should know the answer to this question ... so i feel a little dumb ...

DD grew about 4 inches last year and has outgrown her leg guards. I've ordered 3 different pairs to allow her to try them on. The first pair came in last night and when squatting her knee moved to the very upper part of the knee cup (almost out of the cup).

I don't know if the knee will stay in the same position all the time (I've never really paid that close attention), but if she's almost out of the top of the knee cup, they're probably too short.

Thanks Eric. These were actually the All-Star Vela 14.5's that (I think) your DD has. Your DD seems to be pretty thin. Did you have issues getting them snug enough?

BTW, the other two pair that just arrived are the Wilson Promotion 16" and the Mako FP 16".

Yes, my DD is currently using the 14.5 All-Stars. She's pretty lean, but not so much that she couldn't get the legs comfortably snug. I expect that we will be looking at replacing them soon.

I will try to take some pics of my DD tonight in different positions (stand, RO stance, NR stance, and block) so we can look at how/if the knee cup placement changes.

Don't go out of your way, Eric ... but I thought it was an interesting question.

If the knee is not staying in the main knee cup, the guards are not tight enough or may be too large/small depending on the length of the lower leg.

One point to note here....on most modern shin guards, the top knee cup is NOT the cup that the knee should rest in. The All-Star Vela guards you mentioned actually have a fantastic velcro padding inside of the first knee cup after the shin to provide cushion that you can actually pull out and reposition inside the guard to better line up with the knee cap.

Also, All-Star designed the plastic shell on their shin guards to allow it to be slightly pliable. You can form it to the leg by pushing the sides together or pulling them apart.

This should all help in keeping the knee inside that part of the shin guard at all times.

Hope this helps.

Good info, CCJR. However, the part quoted has me a little bit confused. In the image below, what cup are you saying the knee should rest in at all times. I assumed it was the large cup with the d3o graphic in it, correct? (unless I'm a lot more clueless than I thought)

You have it right, Grogger. The top cup will be above the knee at the bottom of the thigh. The knee cap goes in the d3o cup. This is in line with what Jay said, too.
