Step One For Tags at The Plate While not exactly step one, having the ball in your mitt before attempting to make the tag is imperative. We work with our catchers extensively on this. Experience is the best teacher on when a catcher can make the play and when to eat the ball and prevent base runners from advancing... In this case the catcher had no play and rushed the tag needlessly. This is a great way to let base runners advance. Please practice tag plays and pop ups with your mask on and stay clear of the baseline when setting up to tag...
