DD is playing RF and ball is hit over her head, she made a nice running catch for 3rd out.

1st base coach on opposing team stayed on field to give her a low five.

This is why I like softball, little things like this matter.

I love coaches who do that. It makes a big impression on the players to get recognized by the opposing coach. It's a small gesture that can mean a lot.

I try to do this. I must admit I find it easier to do when we are winning than when the opposing player just saved 2 runs with an amazing play with two outs in a close game.

My dd (9yr) was playing way in on third (cause she is braver than smart) and got a hard shot hit at her. Caught her in the arm inside of the elbow. She picked the ball up and threw the girl, then started crying. After she calmed down and got back in the game the 3rd base coach checked on her and was talking to her. The next day I get an email from their coaches asking how she was. Really nice gesture by those guys.

sometime there are actually good people out there.

I usually sit right behind home plate or just to the side since I do book. I always try to say good job to the opposing catcher when they make a good grab. Not sure if they hear me though.

I find most coaches and teams we play are nice people. Maybe 1 in 10 treats it like it's some bitter NFL rivalry. I've met some great kids who play 1B or 3B coaching the bases. Some of them just crack me up with comments.

As a team we always tried to treat the other teams like they were part of us. We played an 18U game last year when a kid stepped on 1B wrong. She wasn't seriously hurt but was limping around pretty good. We told the coach they could run for her if they wanted. He said they didn't have any subs. We told him as long as the PU was OK with it they could use the last out. It wasn't a big gesture, but we didn't want to see the kid running in pain. We played in championship game later that day and that team stayed around to watch most of it even though they had a couple of our driver ahead of them.

Taking a moment to acknowledge a great play, toughness, grit....can never be underestimated.

We ended up with a young lady on our TB team that we'd played against for three years. Every time we played her she did something fantastic (diving catch, heads up double play, home run). Because of my "congratulations" and short acknowledgement during the game or post game hand shakes...she remembered us. When things went south on her team...ours was the first team they contacted. She told her dad "That coach always remembered me and said something positive....even though he was the OTHER coach". My motivation for being nice wasn't to get another player...it was that be polite respect the game and be encouraging to all goes along way in a young lady's life.

Out of town 12U tourn....team we were playing was way over matched. 3B was having a rough day. Runners 1st and 2nd. GB hit to her she goes to one for the out. Her coach looses his mind screaming at her that she should have tagged her base to get the lead runner. The GB was a short slow roller and she charged it and threw out the runner at 1st. She had no play at 3rd. I'm in 3B coaches box and quietly tell her I thought it was a heads up smart play and to keep working hard. Turned out that was the only inning they got out of with outs instead of run maxed. Post game she thanked me for my words of encouragement...she said it meant a lot coming from the other team. Sometimes acts of kindness/camaraderie can make all the difference in a young players day/tournament.

Their parents do :) if they don’t. Best compliment my catching daughter got was a game ball on Sunday from the umpire for being the best he’d seen all weekend. Those are the things that keep me smiling as we tackle the ups and downs. Thank you on behalf - and if the player doesn’t hear that’s probably good cause they are focused and are tuning out the sidelines.

We played a game this year and the 3B was "all world." She even made an over the head catch running toward our fence. I developed a dialogue with her during the game but that one I had to give her a high five. Her dad yells out at me and I turn around to see her dad. I coached against him as both a player and coach. After the game they both came over and we had a great talk. He told his dd how intense I was and that when I gave her a high five, he was so proud of her. Truth be told, I don't care who's team makes plays like that, as a fan of the game, those things are special. Quincy, that is a neat story and congrats to your dd!!! Any catch over the head is special and ones players tend to remember for a very long time.
