What did everyone get up to this weekend?

Our first tournament went really well. We won both our pool games and seeded into the highest of the 3 brackets. #3 seed out of 21 teams, not bad for our first outing. We played a couple of really solid 05 teams in bracket and got sent home after losing both. The first one was 3-2 and lost in the final play. REALLY good game. They had a pitcher who was very fast and had a pretty decent riseball. That game was really exciting. The second bracket game was at 8 am. They got up on us 5 runs in the first inning, our only sloppy inning of the weekend (the 2nd inning they were still half asleep but looked better anyway). We woke up in the 3rd, tried to come back, lost 8-3 in the end.

We found out this weekend that our girls have great chemistry, and that at least right out of the gate we don't have any problem parents. Our defense really stood out except for those 2 bad innings and we don't have any major holes in our lineup. Pitching will be our weakness all year, I think. I'm hoping after fall we may pick up another bracket pitcher. We're holding the 12-spot for her, whoever she is.

DD played her second collegiate double header yesterday (once again without me in attendance). She went 5-8 over the two games with 2 singles, a double, 2 home runs and 6 RBIs. Also started both games and played every inning - 12.5 behind the plate and 1.5 at first and while behind the plate executed a 2-3-2 double play on a bunt. Maybe she doesn't need mom there to play well...

DD's team played in their end of season tournament this weekend.
They played really well on Saturday, and even on Sunday, although they got knocked out a little earlier than we would have liked.
DD had a great weekend - going 9 for 10 on the weekend. She was hitting and slapping and just keeping the defense on their toes!
I love that her coaches give her the opportunity to explore what she is capable of and 100% believe in her.

The one thing that frustrated me this weekend...
Softball is a fall sport in Colorado for highschool - so highschool players are not allowed in our fall ball league. However, once HS season is over the HS girls can come back to play. HS regionals and state are underway so some girls are done and some are still playing. The team that knocked us out brought all their HS girls back for the fall ball tournament. Last weekend DD's team played them and won 12-0. This weekend the other team looked completely different with 6 HS girls added. I just think our league needs to make a rule that you play the end of season fall ball tournament with the girls you played all fall with. I have no problem with the HS players coming back for the Halloween tournaments, or other fall tournaments, but when you've played all fall in a little fall ball league with 11 girls and then return for the end of that league tournament with 6 new players that is bogus. 3 teams did this - including the team DD left this season. I was so proud of DD's team - being a true 1st yr team, doing as well as they did.

DD had a school event and missed Saturday. She texted coach Saturday afternoon to see if they needed her on Sunday. A player got hurt and another had to leave so he asked her to head down. An odd pool to bracket caused us to have to play another bracket number one seed first game and after they went 3-0 on Saturday and we gave them a run in the first they walked out in the second like they were ready for Nationals. We just hammered them and won semi game before losing to a pretty good team in the finals. Nice to be at the fields late on Sunday for a change.

DD attended open house at one the colleges she in interested in. She was invited to attend an event that the softball team was doing. But we had already made plans to play in a benefit tournament. The tournament helped raise a good amount of money for a softball family who was involved in an unfortunate accident. While at the benefit tournament, dd was introduced to another local college softball coach. D walked up to coach with the sunglasses she got earlier from the other college at the open house. LOL
They ended up winning the tournament. Every tournament that DD has played in since her last pitching lesson with Rick Pauly, she had made it to the championship game for 2 different teams. I cannot place a finger on what it was but there has been a clearly visible improvement...not just mom and dad noticed but other parents as well.

Rec games...
DD's favorite play at catcher these days is with girl at 3rd...throw to 3rd to make the girl run and then 3b throws back to DD and gets the girl at home. On Saturday, I was surprised she did it twice since 3b wasn't a girl who I'm 100% confident in. She's making good throws to 2nd also but our SS gets it and drops it. Another girl caught one inning last night and it's like night and day - DD has 0 passed balls and only the 1 SB (in 3 innings) but not as experienced girl had at least 6 PBs... I try not to get super frustrated but just catch the ball!

DD pitched well, 7IP, 5 SO, 2 BB, 2 hits, 1 ER and we lost 0-1....told DD she needs to pickup a bat and start helping herself out because the rest of the team is struggling to score runs.

This weekend our girls played our first tournament after the death of our assistant coach and they were unstoppable!! They scored 73 runs over 6 games (I don't think we scored that many in the last 2 tournaments combined), everything was firing on all cylinders. They won the championship and the ending couldn't have been scripted any better. We were up by 1 run in top of the last inning runner on 3rd with 0 outs, our pitcher gets back to back Ks, than walks the next batter. The runner on 3rd decides to try and delay steal home our P fires the ball to our catcher (who happens to be the daughter of the coach who passed) she turns and applies the perfect tag game over. It was the first tournament this team has won (this is our second year together). I've been coaching for 7 years and this was definitely the most emotional wins I've ever been a part of.
