My DD had played a CYO type league for two years, then Little League for two years. At the end of the 2nd year of LL, last summer, when she was 11 years old, our town was not putting together a summer team, so I looked for something else for her. I found a C-level team for the summer. It was a new organization and the team was very weak, but a DII player was their coach, so the training was pretty good. After two months it was clear she wanted more, her teammates were not as committed to the game as she was and their weak play frustrated her. I should say my DD has been asking me to practice with her usually 3 or 4 days a week since she was 7.
So last August she tried out for a local B level travel team. The coaches were so impressed with her, she is a catcher, they asked her to stay for the 14U tryouts. She made the 14U team. She played through the fall with the 14U team, and held her own. During the winter the president of the organization said they wanted to keep her in 12U rather than play at 14U. Of course she was disappointed. Now, she has had a good season with the 12U, and we haven't talked about her not playing 14U in a while. The other day I bumped into her old 14U head coach, and she told me the 14U coaches were fighting to keep my now 12 year old daughter on the 14U team, but she was moved only because the 12U team did not have a reliable catcher.
I would have never expected her to impress so many coaches, when she had such little formal training.
