Wasn't it? This is actually her first year of travel. She'd played All Stars but never travel before this fall. She started out with a 000 batting average most weekends, and rotating through right field. Busted her butt and is now starting 2B, center field, and lead off hitter. She's a pretty amazing kid!

The fact that she is working her tail off and she is seeing the results of all that hard work makes it even better. The parents, coaches, and the young girl that improved so much should all be congratulated for their great job.

I wish I could say the same for the girls on my daughter's 10u travel team that started at the bottom of the totem pole last fall. Unfortunately I don't think those girls ever pick up a softball outside of team organized practices or games. The gap in talent from the top 3 players to the talent of the bottom 3 players has only widened over the course of the season.

We have some of that also, unfortunately. We've got a couple who are really there for the social interaction and you can tell they don't practice on their own at all. We don't have a lot of that, but enough that we have an outfield hole we really need to patch up in the fall if we can.

Busy week for DD....

She started the week by being diagnosed with a respiratory infection and being placed on two prescriptions to manage it. She was told the average peak flow for a person her age should be 450 and she was at 240. Breathing was difficult for her.

She was scheduled to participate in the NFCA Academic Camp on 6/14. Based on her condition I asked her if she wanted to go through with it. She stated that she wanted to, realizing she would not be at her best. She was pretty happy with her performance. According to the results, there were players from 19 states participating in this event. She was above average in nearly every category (with the exception of 20 yard dash and the shuttle drill, which we expected). She was top 20% in several categories, and top 10% in some of the pitching categories. This was her first ever experience with the rev fire, so we were not sure what to expect. Turns out she had the 2nd highest spin rate for any riseball and the overall highest spin rate for any drop curve at the event!!

We then moved on to a tournament in Ocean City, MD. The team battled hard all weekend and was able to come home with 2nd place in the 18u division. They played 3 close games on Sunday, winning each of them. But then finally ran out of steam when facing the defending champions in the Championship game. To be honest, the winners were very good. I'm not sure we would have beat them even if we were rested. But it was a great performance anyway. DD had a solid weekend as well, winning 2 of the 3 games she pitched in and batting well with several key hits and RBIs. This will probably be her final year of true "travel" softball, so we are savoring every moment of it. It goes by wwaayy too fast...
