I want to brag on my husband this time, even though we're supposed to brag on our kids. DD picked up Saturday in Chattanooga. I was sick and stayed home. Apparently the weather was so ridiculously awful that they ended early on Saturday then cancelled Sunday. But he sat up there alone in the freezing cold and sleet (really!) watching her play. Plus it was an almost 2 hour drive each way. I was almost glad I was sick, it sounded so miserable. I hear she had some good plays, a really cool backhand stop at SS, but I was too sick to remember to pack the charging cable for the GoPro so I got no video.

Whatcha got?

DD's team did well this weekend at a HS tourney. Her D5 School was 1st seed in the A bracket so they were playing D1 schools on Saturday. First game she went 3-4 with 3 stand up doubles. She struck out looking her second at bat, video shows a questionable call on the outside corner. She came in to pitch the last three innings and did well. A few runs scored a few errors were made. Heading in to the last inning tied 12-12 our clean up batter hit one off the top of the fence for a HR, DD followed with a double into the left field corner but was stranded. DD closed out the game, getting a weak grounder to second, a weak pop out to second and a comebacker to the mound to end the game. 13-12 win.

So that put DD's team in the championship game against the favorite to win the tourney. This team was very solid. DD went 3-3 with 2 2B's to left center and a line drive over the center fielder's head for her 6th two bagger of the day. She pitched one inning with a K and gave up 0 runs. She played first base and cut down two speedy runners heading for 3rd. Down 4-5, DD hit her 3rd 2B of the game in the bottom of the 6th. Out of nowhere she easily steals 3rd. This catcher had already thrown out 2 runners at 2nd and DD is no speed demon. I couldn't believe coach gave her the steal sign. She was stranded on 3rd as the final out was made. DD'S team lost the championship but the girls were still happy and proved they can compete with the big dogs.

After the game I asked DD why the hell coach gave her the steal sign, she said he didnt. Relieved, I asked "missed hit and run sign?" She said nope, "I watched the ball out of the pitchers hand, saw a low pitch and took off for 3rd". All I could say was good job!

6 games for DD's team over 2 days. Team went 5-0-1, and showed some real determination to battle to the end for a couple of those wins. Unfortunately, DD is unable to play defense due to an arm issue, but she contributed massively to her team by going 10-for-11, with a BB and a ROE, reaching base all 12 times she came to the plate.

DD high school team went 5-0 over the weekend tourney. They scored 78 and gave up 8 over the 5 games. I would brag on DD's pitching, but it really wasn't much of a challenge. Gotta love high school ball.

My brag for this weekend isn't about how DD played, but that for the third time this season I've had a parent tell me how much their daughter likes DD. Apparently DD is mentoring the younger/newer players - sitting with them in the dugout, cheering them on, partnering with them in drills.

Even her coach pulled me aside to say, "She's our best player, but she's still so *nice.* Just being herself is helping the team come together."

DD played with a mean girl (who was the star player) her first fall in 8U, and it was hard for her. She was so miserable that I thought she might quit softball altogether. So I guess now that she's the big kid, she doesn't want anyone else to feel the way she did that fall.

So I'm a proud mama. I've got a good kid.

That's wonderful to hear! They only play softball for so long but they can be good people their whole lives. My DD had to play with a mean girl last season too. I think it was a good lesson for her, but I'm equally glad we're not in that situation anymore. I guess some girls learn the right lessons, and some don't. Good for her :)
