DD (2019) won the throw down competition at TN Tech pitching/catching camp on Thursday. Got down to the final two and had a throw off. Her and the other young lady were also this close in the preliminary round. Got some interest from multiple colleges too! DD is in all black.

Nice! One of the things that jumps out at me is the quickness of her feet.

I see coaches work on transfer quickness as their primary focus for improving pop times. This is only part of the equation. An efficient transfer is important, and can't be neglected, but often it's the tempo of the lower body that dictates how soon the throw gets away.

I agree. I saw some girls who looked to have very quick transfers and releases who were throwing mid 1.8's. I think you hit the nail on the head.

I recently got a chance to work with a young catcher who was checking out our team. She is a very good athlete - tall, lean, and strong. She can throw with excellent velocity (for her age), but her pop time is slow. As I watched her, it became clear that it was all being dictated by the speed of her footwork. Significant improvements were made by getting her to increase the tempo of her feet - like speeding up the music of a dance.

Great job, very impressive. What's her overhand throwing velocity?

PS I can't help cringing at the exposed throwing hands on both finalists!

She was timed in the fall at 64mph. I need to time her again this spring while her arm is fresh. I think both catchers were sneaking their throwing hand around early to better the times. :)

64 is rarified air. Any idea what she is out of the crouch? FWIW, I am an advocate of hand behind the glove w runners on.

Love how the rear hip pulls the leg. Bet there is a good stretch and explosive launch to her swing.

Never radared her on a throwdown. 64 was upright with a crow hop like an outfielder coming through a ball thrown into a screen. She surprises a lot of teams with her arm strength, she's only 5'4" 125lb. She does get a good stretch, her nemesis is her front shoulder flying open on her swing. Always something to work on. :)

We dabbled with the hand behind the glove a few years ago. She just didn't feel comfortable with it.
