    Premier National Softball tournament

As I recall the ball was caught while the CF was falling into the fence and she held onto the ball as she and the fence collapsed to the ground. Regardless of the official definition of whether this was a legal catch or not, it was a great play.

    Cat Osterman Experience 14U

I agree they should allow food/snacks/drinks brought to the rooms at least. I bought a blanket and some healthy snacks at a local Walmart and used the blanket to sneak in the snacks.

    Cat Osterman Experience 14U

My daughter's review of COE: I'm Abby and I'm on the X-treme 14U Red team, which was recently in the COE tournament. Overall, I had a lot of fun in the tournament meeting other teams and also hanging out with mine. The dorm rooms and bathrooms are what I expected, but with all the rain, I think...

    Cat Osterman Experience 14U

My daughter's team (Xtreme 14U Red) was at the COE last week and had a great time overall. They played against teams from Michigan, Missouri, Tennessee, Florida, Texas, Utah and Nebraska. They learned they were competitive against all these teams and they had a great time bonding. From my...

    Changing speeds

While experimenting with different change-ups I had my daughter focus on keeping her throwing arm (elbow & wrist) straight through the windmill (to reduce arm-whip) and palm the ball - letting her arm "float" after release. This didn't work as a true change-up but does work as an offspeed...

    How much practice is enough?

Personally I think every day is too much, unless only 50 or so pitches are being thrown each day. My goal for my daughter (who is 14 now) is four days a week throwing 100 - 150 pitches each practice. With school and travel ball she was pitching 2 entire games for school per week and 3 - 10...

Poor form and rushing the kids too fast

I agree with Straightleg, do your best to pitch to where they swing. I did this during my daughter's LL days when coach pitch was used with reasonable success. I would have the girls step out of the box after each pitch and take a couple of hard swings, then I would do my best to pitch to...

I yelled "I got it I got it I got it " From Center Field

Unless you sound like a little girl when you yell I doubt you distracted the center fielder.

    Length to weight ratio

I suggest researching & shopping on Justbats.com The prices are good as is the service. Also you may be able to find a previous year model for a good price as well.

    One Little Victory

Jugs nets are evil - our team has two and one folds fine the other though will not fold correctly no matter how many men attack it!!!

The softball world outside of SoCal

SE PA here - suburbs of Philadelphia. Our area has middle school softball. My daughter's school has a 7th grade team and an 8th grade team. Each practices 2 hours a day Monday - Friday. They'll play other local middle school teams in a 6 week season - either 2 or 3 games per week. A couple...

    emergency pitching need

I would have the girls simply work arm circle drills then incorporate a small circle premotion with a step-style pitch - this is about as simple as it gets. Since most of the velocity comes from the arm circle it's crucial to work this aspect. Have your pitchers play catch using the windmill...

    Speed and Geometry 101

Maybe another way to explain & demonstrate is to have a girl stand at 45 degrees to her target but extend the pitching arm out to the side. Start with little circles and "pitch" from a small circle - no power. Next have the arm extended 45 degrees to the side and "pitch" using a medium circle...

    Personalizing your glove

When I was a kid I used a magnifyinig glass to write my name on my glove - it's still there nearly 40 years later!

    Help with choice

If MIT is offering a good scholarship then it sounds like an excellent opportunity for you. Remember college is about education, not sports, so MIT is an exceptional choice.

    Quality of Travel Ball

I don't have any experience in comparing today's teams to previous year's teams, but I do think there are more sporting opportunities for girls today in a wider variety of sports which may be a factor.

Worst rule in softball: Dropped Third Strike?

I like the rule for the older girls, say 12U & above for travel level & 14U & above for rec level. It adds another level of competitiveness & excitement to the game.

    Couple of Technique Questions

"Leaping. It defentitly will give more speed, but is it safe? Legal? I've watched the videos of a Virginian teacher (something Lynn, gone completely blank) and to me the style she teaches looks illegal to me, with the back leg rising up." I think you're referring to Rita Lynn Gilman: Rita Lynn...

    Self Taught Pitching?

My daughter has been largely taught by me. She's 14 now and has been pitching 5 years. I taught myself the basics from DVDs and practiced throwing hundreds of balls a week for a couple of years to really understand what I was being taught. My favorite DVDs are Michele Smith's since they are...

    First Time Manager: 13/14 Girls

"(F) If you have the girls "in position" as you hit a ball to each position, one at a time, then every real softball coach out there will know you are clueless. Your players' time would be better spent watching the 3D version of Avatar." I agree to a point with the above quote IF the other...
