    Dropped 3rd: Safety Base

This is local high school ball so I'm not surprised. This happens in the last inning of the game. It's a dropped 3rd in foul territory, the 1st baseman sets up in foul territory using the safety base. The catcher's throw is a little off line and comes in right over the runner's shoulder. The 1st...

Pitchers With Less Than Perfect Mechanics

As an instructor I am probably too concerned with perfect form. There are a lot of ways to get it done. Of course there are a few absolutes, like IR, but outside of that things get fuzzy. I'm watching a Boston College game on tape and their pitcher, Abby Dunning, is only 5'4" and supposedly...

    Rothrock's Grip

This the second game in which I have watched Keagan Rothrock of Florida. It's pretty clear to me that she uses the fatty grip on all her pitches. She throws the bullet rise (with a touch of backspin) a lot. All the strikeouts and significant contact where they slo-mo replay the pitch have the...

    Clearwater Invitational

This event has turned into an offensive showcase with homers and runs scored far surpassing totals from previous years. I'm wondering if this is due to a cyclical fall off in the quality of the pitching, or an increase in the quality of the hitting. They also have a pitch clock, the hitter has...

    Two Runners on a Base

I'm guessing that the rules vary by organization but I don't have any idea what they are in general. I'm watching an NCAA game and the runner between 2nd and 3rd gets caught in a rundown. She gets chased to 3rd where there is already a runner, for a second both are on the base and the lead...

    Scap Retraction, Loading

I have never really thought about the scap when it comes to pitching, there are too many other things to get 'right'. The other day I was warming up with one of my pitchers. We start with 15-20 overhand throws then switch to some easy sling shots followed by some easy walk-in ball circles. Then...

    Practice vs Games

There are some nuggets in this blog about instruction in practice and how it changes when you get into game situations. It's about a golf study but it applies in all sports. https://toddhargrove.substack.com/p/focus-of-attention-in-golf

    Ball Rollback?

I don't know how many golfers there are on the site but for those who aren't there is a rule change coming which will rollback the distance the golf ball will be legally allowed to travel. The distances that players can hit the ball, mostly pro and low handicappers, especially with the driver...

    Prohitter, Thoughts?

I'm wondering what people think about the Prohitter and the Thumbpro. I prefer the latter because it seems more stable and doesn't move around like the Prohitter. I see a lot of MLB players with the Prohitter, I don't know if they get paid when they use it or whether they feel it helps. To me...

    Coming to College Softball?

I wonder if any high level softball players are cashing in on this? https://news.yahoo.com/rich-donors-loose-rules-transforming-153716452.html?guccounter=1 This another link, hopefully it works.

    Pitcher: Hands Separated

The pitcher steps on the rubber with her hands separated as the batter steps into the box with her hand up for time out, which the ump grants by raising his hand. The pitcher then brings her hands together while the ump still has his hand up for time out. Does the time out effect the legality of...

    Auburn Alabama game

Alabama runners on first and third. Runner on first takes off for second, batter has swung on the pitch and her momentum takes her over the plate and she partially interferes with the catcher's throw. However Auburn has a play on and the second baseman is cutting the throw to second with an eye...

    Runner Taking Second?

I'm at a D3 college game. Runner on 1st, no outs. Batter hits a ground ball to 3rd who fields it and throws to 2nd for the force, 2nd baseman's throw to 1st for the DP is very late. 1st base throws the ball to pitcher who is in the circle. The runner, who has gone way down the line is very...

    College In Season Training

As an instructor I often lose contact with my students once they leave and head off to college. And even for the ones who come back for some work I never really talk to them about how they train during the season. Does anyone have any information about what pitchers do for training during their...

    Half Bat?

I have my own version of this that I use to teach ball/bathead trajectory. But I use an Axe bat/handle which requires a consistent grip - bat head alignment. I also shortened the bat because I use wiffle balls and I want the sweet spot to be similar to what a normal size bat would have.

    Tight Spin?

I see this phrase used all the time, 'tight spin'. I assume it means high RPM spin, but maybe not. If there is another meaning could someone explain it?

    The Wrist

I'm talking fastball here, normally wrist action is a no-teach for me. Lately I have taken on several students who came with a history of warming up with wrist snaps and using HE mechanics. Some had a few lessons and some were 'monkey see, monkey do'. After weaning them off snaps and teaching...
