For me being the umpire on what you have said here the infield fly rule is in effect but you also say the ball was hit behind the short stop... so without seeing this with my own two eyes I would not call the infield fly because the ball was behind the short stop... this description makes me...
Well the holy grail of the play has everything to do with "does the pitcher have the ball and is the pitcher in the circle.... if this is not the case then what you describe here I dont see the look back rule being called until the pitcher having the ball in the circle and then the they(umpire)...
