True Story: Last weekend, we are at a tournament and a parent of a player on the other team seeks out my AC (red flag #1 - his DD's team is still playing) to ask if we have a roster spot for another pitcher. My AC tells him yes we do, contact the head coach (me). The parent emails and then...
Coaches, you know we all have pitcher parents who have completely lost their minds at times. What are your best stories? I'll post mine later this evening.
Ugh. I hate this time of year. I hated it as a parent because taking DD to various tryouts was always nerve-wracking, but in the end, I always knew she would have a place to play. Now as a non-parent coach, I think I really hate tryouts more than when DD played. Lots of really good kids -...
OK, today I want to intentionally walk a batter - four straight balls. I instruct my catcher to stand up with her body behind the opposite batter's box (ie within the catcher's box). The PU says no, she has to be crouched down and in the catchers box to receive the pitch. I say no, she has to...
The Winning thread got me thinking. This is something I have stressed to my team for many years. Would you rather win a game 21-20 or lose a game 2-1? I'll reserve my comments until later.
I mounted an Ion Air Pro 2 to a batting helmet and shot some video of players hitting off a tee:

I'm trying to decide if this is in any way useful. It might be better with live pitching or off a machine.
OK, this one is a good one. There are now "National" teams popping up in PA and NJ promoting their tryouts. What is a "National" team if you are not recruiting nationally?
14U game this weekend, opposing HC is just being an @$$, riding the umpires, complaining about evry little call that doesn't go his way. Not sure why he wasn't run out but he and his ACs are at it all game. Would have been fine except for the comments about how they shouldn't be losing to such...
14U pool game, playing 1:10 drop dead. You are the visiting team and are up 4-1. Starting the bottom of 5 with 10 minutes left on the clock. The home team has only managed 2 hits off your #1 pitcher, and batters 7/8/9 are coming up (PONY rules, they are batting 10 with an EP).
1. #7 batter...
Interested in some thoughts. We were invited to play in one this summer. I thought it would be a good experience for my players, even though the majority will not be recruited and probably won't get a single look. I do have one player who will get legitimate interest. Is it worth it for the...
I don't know who posted this on NJ.com, but agree with everything he says:
I was at a league meeting recently for my dd and the topic came up of a local older player I know (who I guess no one realized I knew) who in the past few months made a verbal commitment. Instead of being happy for her...
In Eastern PA, there are more teams registered as 14U "C" teams is USSSA than A or B teams combined (only ONE A team). Some of the teams registered for C are from organizations that have been around for years and often brag they are an "A" level TB organization.
What is going on?!
Twice this week I lost track of outs in innings where we were up, and on the second out (which I thought was #3), I turned to the dugout and started calling my team to take the field. Needless to say, my base runners are smarter than me, and knew there were only 2 outs, but started in towards...
Playing an elimination game tonight at PONY Nationals, and my catcher hits a line drive shot back at the pitcher. The ball hit her square in the chest - she had no chance to react. My first reaction was to stop our runners and see if the pitcher was OK. Amazingly, she only had the wind...
I have not bought new softballs for my teams in 3 years. When I am out walking my dogs, I usually go to the softball fields, where I usually find at least one or two a week in good shape. If I see an unattended game ball at a tournament, I put it in my bucket. I can't possibly be the only one...
