Pontificating is what this site is all about. And yes, I like to think that I’ve learned a lot from it. Thanks to the pontificators out there for sharing your knowledge and experiences.

Living this right now. Here is my cautionary tale, for what it's worth:
DD started working with a Tincher instructor late in her second year of 10U. I thought it would be a good time to get serious, as the change in distance and ball size would present a challenge to all the pitchers. When 12U...
As first-year 12's, DD's team still plays the best arms at 3rd/SS/2nd. On ball hit to the outfield, the shortstop (best arm on the team) typically runs to the edge of the grass to take a throw from LF or CF while 2B covers the bag. On hits to RF, 2nd goes out for the throw while SS covers 2nd...
This is probably the root cause. We hear a lot on DFP this time of year about HS cuts and who the coach's favorites are. I'm sure some of that goes on, but experienced teachers (my dad was a teacher and a coach for 30 years) tend not to get that emotionally invested. Every player is just passing...
Here in NJ, we had a couple of weeks in February of sunshine and temps in the 50's. I actually allowed myself to hope that we might get outside early this season. Alas, the parade of nor'easters has left a coating of icy slush to insulate the mud underneath. Poor DD is tired of fielding...
I saw Tim Walton give a presentation about infield defense in January 2016. During the Q/A that followed, someone in the audience asked his opinion about infielders wearing facemasks. He said that up until recently, he saw them as a deficiency -- that the fielder didn't have enough confidence in...
Wisdom here. This was my kitchen table the last time DD needed a new set of gear:
We ordered every major set and tried everything on, then picked the best of each. We mostly used Amazon Prime and Dick's in-store pickup, so the only shipping we had to pay was for returns. It's worth it though...
I think this is a good point to remember when thinking about gear for a TB player. Eriksen has been working with the best of the best for a long time. When your pitching staff is Monica Abbott, Cat Osterman, Jennie Finch, and Lisa Fernandez, it's not too likely that your catcher will be spending...
Just saw USF coach Ken Eriksen at s conference, he recommended using a first baseman's mitt for all catchers. His reasoning was that most finger injuries result from catching pitches too close to the palm, the first base mitt has the big web that directs the ball away from any direct contact...
As some others have mentioned, it appears that the nasty ads that take over your browser are powered by malware from some other source. From my limited tech background, I'd guess that there is some weakness in the vBulletin software that is being exploited. That's why you often get re-directed...
I'm in Central NJ, DD attended the Catching Camp in Manheim PA last year. Not too far a drive, there are plenty of inexpensive hotels nearby if you want to stay overnight. It's the first weekend in December, I highly recommend it.
DD has a situation now where it's obvious that the coach's kids have been encouraged to be leaders on the field. Unfortunately, that's translated into the coach's daughters telling their teammates that they should have made a play, or that a routine mistake is something that "can't happen!" At...
Our local rec LL was coach pitch in 8U, modified coach pitch in 10U. In both cases, things changed during All Stars/playoffs. 8U went to machine pitch (the blue flame) and 10U went to all kid pitch. Our biggest problem was often getting other leagues to agree on rules (nobody in the area had...
DD just made the jump from the Prospect to the MVP. She's only had it for a few weeks so I can't speak to the durability, but the MVP is definitely a higher-quality leather and a sturdier glove than the Prospect. It requires a bit more break-in time (the Prospect was soft right off the shelf)...
^^^ This!! I always remind DD that she can catch a pitch on her knees but she can't block a ball while up on her feet. The combo drill is an essential way to help catchers recognize when they need to get down.
DD has a 12" Schutt Scorpion chest protector, which has been great. However, the straps were way too long and could only be tightened so much. It's crazy, how big do they think someone wearing a 12" chest protector is?
Any way, DD broke out the sewing machine and sewed a loop into the straps...
