    University Closing - Season Cancelled

Similar thing happened to my DD her freshman year at a private university - they decided that they were short on funding, starting pitcher got hurt in fall ball and was out for the rest of the school year so they dissolved the softball team. I had to fight tooth and nail to get them to honor her...

Texas Tech Softball $10,000 NIL Deal for softball players

Oklahoma University has an NIL deal for all of their football, basketball (men's and women's) and softball players. $50k potential for each athlete in exchange for community service...

    Parents.... Subtitle: The bad apples

Unless it was a "stay to play" tournament, we typically stayed at a different hotel than most of the players/parents for a couple reasons. First, when you are playing so many games in a weekend, that is a lot of together time with your team (our team also had team lunches at the field, so that...

    DI Tryouts

I believe that all D1 schools are required to have open tryouts.

    First week of college practice

Welcome to college athletics. It is a huge juggling act, especially freshman year. My DD lost weight and was getting less than 5 hours of sleep because there just wasn't enough hours in the day to get everything done. Got a little easier once she settled into a routine but still dang tough...

POLL~To move or Get hit by pitches~

I think that it honestly depends on the batter. A fast base runner that bats in the .200's - wear that pitch like a shirt. Slower base runner that hits bombs (like my DD was) - she would do everything she could to get out of the way so that she would have another chance to hit the ball.

    Travel ball with no Sundays?

Move to Utah or Eastern Idaho - tournaments are Friday/Saturday because of the LDS religion being prevalent out here.

Colleges/Universities with high academic standards (engineering)

My DD when into college knowing she was going to study nursing. She picked a college with a great nursing program, knowing that she would only realistically be able to play 2 years of softball if she wanted to graduate in 4 years. She ended up only playing one year and transferring to another...

Catcher's removing her helmet- driving me crazy!

My DD was a catcher. She guest played for a team at a big tournament in a nearby state the summer between her junior and senior year and the coach continued to yell at her to remove her helmet (she wasn't missing pop ups or anything so I am not sure why it even became an issue) - until she...

Who knows the call signs between pitcher and catcher

When DD played travel ball, the entire team knew the signs - helped the fielders know where the ball was being pitched and possibly anticipate where the ball would go if hit. That is how DD coaches her HS team as well - everyone knows where the ball is going to be pitched. College teams as well...

All High School Coaches Are Bad

And catchers' moms as well. And former catchers make excellent HS softball coaches. Just sayin'.

    Parents Attacking Umpires

My DD is now an assistant Varsity coach at a local HS (in addition to being a full time NICU RN - she's a busy girl at 23). I go to the games to support her and the team as well as being another set of eyes and ears. The last two games that I have been at the umpires have not been very good. And...

Need Advice from HS Coach Regarding HS / Travel Tournament Conflict

In our state the high school activities association prohibit a player from practicing or playing on any other team during the HS season. If caught that player would be banned from competing on the HS team. Likewise for coaches.

Joining Long Distance Travel Ball teams

My DD played for a travel ball team nearly 300 miles on the the other side of the state for the last 2.5 years of high school. Drove her over 4 hours one way for practices every weekend, then in the summer after her senior year she drove herself half the time. Not a choice for us - no Class A TB...

    Its High School Ball

I am proud to say that DD has joined the coaching staff as assistant varsity coach of the biggest HS (former rival school) in our area (they sought her out to coach, she didn't apply). She and the varsity coach (former D1 volleyball player, D1 volleyball coach and former HS softball player) are...

    The Decline of Umpiring

DD started umpiring at 14 and umpired through her third year of college. She was highly sought after by tournament directors (even from neighboring states) because of her dedication to the game and her effectiveness as an umpire. She quit because the money just wasn't worth the abuse she took...

What to do during long practices?

My DD played for an 18U team based 3.5 hours away for the last two years travel ball. Practiced every Sunday for 3+ hours (she was a catcher so she would sometimes work after practice with the pitchers since she called her own pitches). Sometimes I shopped, sometimes I ate, sometimes I just went...

    Team USA vs Japan

Should have fielded the Sooners championship team - bet they could have scored some runs.

    Guest playing protocols

When DD (catcher) was asked to guest play, we asked the coach exactly how much he/she was going to play her and what the circumstances were that led him/her to need a guest player. Once we had a clear understanding of what her playing time would be, we would make the decision if we would go or...

    Shortage of Umpires

My DD started umpiring during the summers when she started playing travel ball at 12 years old and umpired through her second year of college. Even umpired state tournaments and was invited to umpire in neighboring states - she was that good and so respected by the TDs and UICs. She stopped...
