This is a great point- I didn’t watch that game but honestly I would not have caught it.
Garcia is overrated as a hitter IMO. Unless the UCLA connection is that strong, I doubt she would have even been selected had the selection been done after this years WCWS. Heck I am not even sure she was the best pitcher on her college team this year..

You could say it was due to great pitching. But Osterman, Abbott, and Ueno were all in the 2008 Olympics when there was more hitting, and they were in their primes then. It just seemed like the approach was to play for one run, and that carried on to their approach at the plate. In my opinion.

Ken just posted this in another thread. Very astute observation in my opinion.

Well, if Team USA had shown signs of hitting dominance against Team Alliance and other practice teams I would believe that it was the excellent Olympic pitching. Didn’t look like they could hit college pitching either though.

I will say this- Olympic softball moves at the speed of light defensively. Emulate that.

Maybe. I'm not overly familiar with this particular team. I watched some non-US games as well and the hitting wasn't any better in my opinion. Kind of matches my feelings for the Olympics as a whole honestly.

I thought the few games I watched her she looked like a typically over used senior….
Could have been. If they wanted to take somebody who can hit, and has hit against grown women, I would have taken that catcher from Italy (Piancastelli). She took some good cuts against USA when they played them..

I wonder if he knew it was going to be on turf he would have carried a slapper. Does Reed slap?
I think both reed and McCleney are slappers but they both mainly opted to hit away lefty for the Olympics. I’m not sure though. I’ve definitely seen reed slap in a game before and I think I’ve seen McCleney slap here and there. It’s strange that neither of them really tried to slap in the Olympic Games. Maybe the defense of the Olympic teams is just too good for slap hits to be as effective as they are in college? Or maybe they both just prefer swinging away?

Japan just had the better skilled team. They were young, well conditioned and played more aggressively and with greater urgency. Their team speed on both sides played at a faster level, which created more pressure.

By comparison, Team USA just couldn’t match. Defense was solid and had some great moments, pitching was just good enough and hitting was inconsistent. Team chemistry and enthusiasm seemed muted.

RISP was an issue.

I think there’s better, younger talent available across the board … both players and coaches.
