Might not apply to this thread, but this is the problem that I could not solve when researching HLP. 1 - Where is the upper going rearward while the lower is going forward. I believe that was called hip slip. 2- How does the hands pass through the path in the clip below if the first move is to send the barrel rearward and not bleed the "corner". This by the HLP method from my research is supposed to be completely behind the rear hip.

I am sure pitch location plays a role.

It looks like the back leg is pulling the hands/barrel through.

Do you think the barrel isn’t moving in an arc? This is where you have to be careful with slow motion. Does the barrel not turn to the lag position?

Some hitters do push for sure. I wish I still had a clip I made of Abreu and Pujols. Huge difference between the two swings.

that’s not hip slip and he’s not using HLP. If I remember our breakup was over “the on and around “ I was sharing with you and Alllie. Hip slip requires you weight to be over the hip and then swing the barrel rearward with the “on and around “ his hand are pushing forward as he turns the barrel. On second thought, he might very well apply HLP principals but is so early to the ball he’s breaking down mechanically? I can only comment on what I see in this clip. BTW this is why most fail or struggle the HLP in the box. The swing is so quick and void of slop most are too early to the contact point, things breakdown.

doesnt this raise a red flag w you? For me, it says the swing is in and out of the zone to quickly.

They do get to Lag, but how they get there is not what Rich is doing IMO. Its not by snapping the barrel rear word, is by the hands (and arms) seeking to get into the pitch plane.

Snapping the barrel rearward, to arc, almost bypassing lag. Notice that its snapped towards the catcher. This doesn't happen imo.

vs the hands and arms seeking the plane of the pitch, which starts to flatten the barrel (un-tipping), which gives the perception of arcing because as the barrel flattens it starts to get to lag. IMO. Almost like a oar lock (not saying it is) as some would say. Its not a forced action, in my eyes. All dependent on pitch location. Of course this could be a incorrect interpretation. Not saying its right or wrong.

Richard is just showing the snap without the body getting set and ready to burst.

When you combine the two engines things look different.

I have no problem with the oar lock analogy.

Lag is just something you pass through. The position will look different depending on timing and pitch location.

This clip you showed is where the barrel starts to get turned.

Ok, I agree the barrel gets turned every swing,. And if you say that's where the barrel starts to get turned, then where does the"snap" occur? He says snap is immediately. I really didn't want to get into all this since this has probably all ben hashed out and debated into the ground before

It’s a great question. You might have seen this but worth another look.

I think there may be a misunderstanding what I'm saying. Rich is saying that you must snap the barrel rearward meaning as in towards the catcher. This is aka turn the barrel. @Shawn is saying the clip of Donaldson is the beginning of that turning of the barrel that rich describes as the snap, the problem with that is, Donaldson like many many others are not actively snapping the barrel rearward toward the catcher. The barrel is naturally un-tipping behind them as in towards their backside (not to the catcher),which as the upper continues to turn, the barrel continues around the forearm.

Full clip of Donaldson - it's way more evident I the front view

Bonds also does this.

Bonds is seeking leverage before swinging "down to" while the kid is ttb while slipping the rear hip.
