We often set way too many goal posts for our kids. Many coaches make the mistake of training kids with high velocity, thinking if they can hit 65, they will have no trouble with 50. Unfortunately that's not the case. I've seen kids struggle just as much with a slow pitcher. I believe you train kids with the average speed. Every now and then let them see 60-65, so they know what it looks like. Let them see 40-45 so they understand what that looks like. But training regularly with high velocity speed gets the kids use to a speed they are only going to see every once so often. Train with the average speed, let them see the outlier speeds on occasion so they understand what they need to change in their approach. JMHO

Big leaguers talk all the time about getting the head out against faster pitching.

if approach Is oppo to let it get deep, then we must pull to get head out to catch out front or a bit earlier to make up for the extra velocity.

the problem is everyone falls in love with the in to out swing bc you can let it travel and make ‘more contact’. But is it better contact? Is it maximizing the at bat? It’s a defensive swing when compared.

Oppo approach is for slappers and 2 strike approaches. Where contact is the optimal result.

train kids to have an adjustable approach. That’s how you hit faster pitching.
