I might be diverging some from the topic but it amazes me the number of players that can't or won't slide.
Yep, I agree! When I (we) started down this crazy softball path, our 12U team, which all the girls were 10 and 11. We would dedicate entire practices to just sliding, they did it until they ALL got it right! Our practice field would look like it had been plowed, but that little team could slide! Half of them hated me, but still they could slide!

My dd hopes to play d1. She's a righty was 2.9 something at a camp as an 8th grader. Rarely gets thrown out stealing 2nd. She seems faster this year after completing her high school soccer season so we will see if we have an opportunity to get her times this winter.

My 7 year old is really fast, but it takes her about 4 or 5 steps to reach full speed, she doesn't have a instant burst. Example is she runs track and in the 50m she will beat girls by a few steps, but running the 200m she will win by 30 or 40 meters. We are still working on base running, she takes really wide turns rounding second and third.
