Think of it as staying closed and anchored against the forward momentum. That’s the explosion. That’s the stability, the balance, the whip. In order for there to be an explosion the legs have gotta stay stable so reactive/reciprocal rotation can take place.

the pelvis opening is a stretch reflex. If you do the JStone PVC drill ‘Walking away from your hands’ correctly, you will feel the pelvis SR. If you keep the bottom half of the leg stable you will feel the middle pull. It’s not so much about the opening. It’s about the stable backside pulling the ‘opening’ torso backwards, propelling the top half forward. I would take the forward rotation out of the description. Imo it’s all reactive rotation, from the pelvis to the front leg to the torso and shoulders..

look at the back leg RESIST rotation. That’s the start and finish of the swing. That gives the body an opportunity to separate forward and backward.

it shows up in many different ways. Eversion, scissor, foot re-anchoring immediately , back foot going up in the air and behind, space being maintained between the feet. Many ways. The Bregman drill is great for feel.

WW, would you post the Bregman drill (video) you are referring to?

I can’t retrieve right now. It’s just a feel drill of staying closed and connected. He’s says to keep everything facing towards the plate while taking his hands above and inside the ball.

ive hasuccess cueing players to stride and maintain the back heel connection in the ground. When done correctly the front side will stay closed, separation is attained reactively and the hands stay back w the barrel up. this was one of Jim Thomes cues. Helps upside-down shoulders a lot...

if you have a leaky launch or pulling off. It’s great. Really helps a player move from the middle as well. The legs can’t compensate.

when I can load the AB clip I will.

I'm sure you've been asked this before, What's your thoughts on JD opening before toe touch/heel plant?

He's opening but still coiled in the rear leg. IR-IR-IR.

If you don't believe in coiling, you have to focus on keeping the front leg 'closed' or you'll leak all over the place.

Two different patterns.

A different look at coiling,

Go to the 5 minute mark.

I played with the weight shift and it felt good. Your back hip still coils with weight shift. Basically you coil, inward turn, and then maintain that coil until toe touch. So you try stay closed like many ML hitters say they try to stay closed.

When she steps it appears there is shoulder and hip separation. IMHO

I always say you can't see much in one photo or video. You need 30 swings to give a fair analysis of hitting issues, or a pitching machine and swing 10 times. So what can be offered? I actually watched it the second time to be certain I hadn't seen slow pitch! But over-all she is pretty good mechanically. But one or two small issues.

You look at the 1st photo and that is a big check-point for me. If all looks well, mechanically speaking it often bodes well for a good swing. But . . . .
I am not sure if this was a rise-ball misjudged, or a high change-up with a mechanical mistake. The reason I say that is because Maddie goes into shoulder tilt appropriately for a pitch waist high. Is that just a reflexive habit, or some mental error? I don't have 30 videos.

The ball comes into view above the lowest bar across the fence. The swing is up at the pitch from that low launch. The bat lag is already a little low at the 3rd photo, indicating that the bat is going to drop below the pitch path. One thing I noted is during separation, Maddie rose up out of her athletic stance into a more, in my opinion, compromised upright position. But I don't think that had much bearing on the results.

Why the unnecessary shoulder tilt?
Why the slightly compromised bat lag?
I think the pitch was well on the inner half or corner, as her front elbow is flexed and she had poor extension after contact. So I can't judge her extension.

It makes me wonder how many sliders he has missed in his career. I am just guessing but I would think he hits poorer than MLB average against breaking pitches, in particular sliders, hits change-ups very poorly. Increase the % of sliders and particularly change-ups and make him a .199 hitter.

If you don’t rotate, it’s seems to me that you will be promoting a cast. Hitting pitches off the hands that are down the gut is no fun
