At what point does chanting go from annoying to un sportsmanlike?

Love cheering and positive chants for your team. Negative chants toward the other team have no place in the game. Girls don't need any help to be mean to each other. We play at the absolutely highest level and you will rarely hear a negative chant. Usually by a team in over their head getting killed. Lots of cheering. Some organized, mostly just positive encouragement. It definitely differs by area as to bucket banging, cow bells and all that jazz.

In my experience, it's never been the girls complaining about chants (or any other noise issue/complaints), it's always salty parents/adults. It's their game, let them police that stuff themselves- adults already insert themselves into the game WAY too much.

How can you hear the chants if you are in the outfield?
Good point. I will modify, "If I don't even hear them when I am watching I am not sure why any OF positioned for the 12U version of Barry Bonds (especially at 12U and above) would. Focus on what you are supposed to be doing"

Of course in that case they would probably hear me mumbling to myself which would probably be worse..

Not knocking your comment but it reminds me of a coach we had at 14s. All male coaching staff and I was an assistant. A few of the girls began bullying some of the others. I noticed it and brought it to HC attention. His exact words were "let the girls police themselves". DD moved on and the bullys are still there but have not managed to keep teammates or grow to their potential. Lesson for me was to eradicate bullying behavior immediately. And I'm no softy.. but teen girls can be impacted by that stuff if it comes from within the team.

Yes! The girls need to know that bullying behavior will not be tolerated. Girls can be vicious. If they don't feel like playing for each other, the team will not perform at their best. And of course, the parents will find another team with a better fit.

I largely agree with that. Maybe I should have added "...within reason" or "... when it comes to softball specifically" to my comment.

We had an umpire stop a team from "crescendo-ing" on pitch release (increasing volume and basically screaming as the pitcher releases).

Other than that, I cringe at "way to walk her" especially at young ages, but whaddaya gonna do...
