On Saturday, during a B level 12U game, the third baseman got injured during the play. The third-base coach tried to hold the runner at 2nd (I trust as a show of sportsmanship) but the girl ran to third and was safe.

Is it legal for that girl to steal second base on the next pitch (go back to second)?

(BTW, I'm really sorry for asking the question, but it's been bothering me for a few days now. Will this ever happened? Has this ever happened?)

Why would it happen?

Batter smokes a ball over the right fielder who falls down making the turn to retrieve the ball. Batter ends up on 3B while RF never gets up off the ground (torn knee, done for the season). There is no way to know if the right fielder just slipped or blew out her knee...it all happens so fast.

I tell my players to run hard until the umpire calls time. The umpire can always move runners back if needed.

In answer to the question...

If I recall correctly, it is not legal to run the bases in reverse. I would expect that your runner would be called out if trying to run from 3B to 2B on the next play/pitch.

Just ask for time and send her back if that's what you want to do. No one is going to argue with you (except the parents in the stands)

Waiting for the folks who inevitably always argue with me about this ... ;)

They will tell you it is legal "because she didn't do it to confuse the defense or to make a travesty of the game."

I will tell you she's out.

Also expect to get a long and strongly-worded message from the parent of the girl you sent back to 2B about how...
1) You're treating her unfairly.
2) You're a terrible coach.
3) Your decision has ruined her chances to play college ball.
4) All of the above.

🤪 😂
