Cape Cod Mass.
We paired up the girls this winter and had them use their cell phones to video each other leaving the base. We positioned the girl with the phone so that the pitcher and the runner were both in view. They use the slo-mo feature on the phone to compare the runners foot with the pitcher's release. Now we had this long layoff and I'm skeptical about whether they have retained any of it.

or just yell "Steal!!" after the first two meaningless signs.

right, and then they still just look at you, right? lol maybe dance around a little bit, couple of fake steals, keep checking with you because they can't believe you really want them to steal, and then back to the bag. love 10U!
Coaching 1st is a riot with these kids. I always ask them if they want to steal 2nd. If they say yes, tell them "Go for it". If they say no, ask them "Get a good lead then?". Do that a couple times, then don't say anything and when they ask you, GAME ON :devilish:

everyone should learn and know how to get an aggressive leadoff. As the kids get older, hardly anyone gets a straight steal sign, catchers get more and more proficient every year. However, most everyone on a team should be able to get an aggressive lead off and read the pitch. Ball in the dirt or slow loopy change is more than enough reason to take a base. Much harder skill than it sounds
