You guys talking about Kelly Leak?

That dude is a bad mother. You talk about a loan shark. I borrowed a nickel from him last week. He said if I didn't give him a dime by Friday, he'd break my arm.

That's him!!! :D

Seriously though, I played Little League and was on the Delta Drug Store team, the Peninsula Bank team, etc. I kind of liked it.

I will say our org is in a strong financial position; our costs are low and we have multiple revenue streams outside registration (field concessions, tournaments, poker night event) so our reserve fund is strong and if we ever needed to drive more revenue we could. Because of this, registration for rec is targeted to be a loss leader and not cover full cost of the league- we are investing in the program.

Two very valid points you bring up ... financial position and revenue streams. (y) I really encourage organizations to NOT rely on registrations alone.

Likewise, our registration was never designed to cover all of the costs of the program. As I mentioned, we are in a school district where 60% of students are receiving free/reduced lunches. Our registration was $50 with a fundraiser option to help offset AND reduced rates for multiple kids. Even with that low of a rate, we did not turn away anybody due to an inability to pay.

That got your kid two scheduled (one week night, one weekend, weather permitting!) practices from April to Mother’s Day. Games started the weekend after Mother’s Day and ran through the end of June. Typically two games a week on week nights. We used to do a post-season tournament after the 4th of July, but by the end of June people were done and we reached the point that it wasn’t worth it. (Back then, we also had a “year-round” school calendar, so kids went back to school the third week of July.) Uniforms were a lightweight sleeveless jersey, a visor, and we had added shorts at one point because we got a package deal from the vendor (it was just t-shirts before me).

Yes we got 1/3 games in... but if you want to be jealous... Travel tournaments start this weekend. I just got the weekend schedule and confirmation that are moving ahead. 6GG over the three day long weekend.

Marriard,

Up till now I have always liked and respected your posts. Now after this last sentence I have to rethink that position. Seriously, good luck this weekend. It has been tough DD had her senior season wiped out. We hope to play the first weekend in June. How is the weather forecast?

We got in 2 practices and zero games in our rec league.

The league send out an e-mail about cancellation and credited 100% of my money to my credit card the next day.

In our league the Coaches/parents deal with their uniforms separate from the league.

93 with the usual afternoon thunderstorm on Saturday.

So HOT and occasionally HOT and HUMID.

Yeah, DD's senior HS season got wiped. That was good and bad. Happy to get any games in before she heads off to college.

Different sport but I participated on the board for our local soccer organization when my daughter was younger. A great deal of our annual budget was spent on field maintenance with the #1 expense being grass cutting for the 8 fields we used.

Our local rec program plays on town-owned fields, but the league is responsible for maintenance. For instance, during the last off-season, they had five trucks of dirt delivered and paid a professional landscaping company to grade all the fields and re-set the bases. The league always runs a surplus, but it’s so that they can take on large projects like that every couple of years. New batting cages are next on the list.

The league is still hoping to play some games this summer, so they haven’t decided how to address refunds. I, for one, will not be expecting one. The money isn’t going into someone’s pocket, it’s getting reinvested in our town’s softball infrastructure, which I support even if my kids are done playing rec ball (we registered this year just to participate in offseason training and for DD to help out with the younger kids).

DD is going to Christopher Newport University in the Fall. Where is your DD going?

It was Amalfe Bros. Tires, Papa’s Exxon, Malin’s Five and Dime, GG Woody Funeral Home, and Roselle Savings Bank for me. Yep - those were our girl’s softball sponsors. 😂
