Is anyone running into any venues that are unwilling to refund the tournament fees for cancelled events?

We’ve had several tournaments canceled and every venue was good about refunding. One particular venue that was out of state for us is not willing to do a refund and wants to hold the money as a credit to be used within the next 12 months.

It’s frustrating because that particular venue is not convenient for us, the next few months are very uncertain and the roster is going to be turning over shortly.

I've only run across one that will not refund the entire amount. They had a caveat that $125 of the fee is non-refundable. I called and they said they still had to pay the reservation fee for the facility, which I had already called. The facility said they weren't keeping any money. I told the TD I was throwing the BS flag since I'd already talked to them. He then tells me it's not up to him but the org President and he said the $125 was non-refundable. I said okay...If that's the way you want t o play it, fine.

I got on our local/state board and let everyone know what was happening...basically blasting them. Pretty much everyone that signed up, as well as me, said we won't play again at any tourney they hold in the future. Lo and behold, everyone is getting a full refund.

Same deal. The tournament in question was a Jennie Finch tournament. I actually wrote to her people as well and let them know that a venue they are supporting is not doing the right thing and refunding it like multiple other places have already done.

It’s the standard verbiage that says they could keep it to apply towards future tournaments.

i’m not saying they can’t legally do what they are doing—I’m saying that from an ethical perspective every other organization I’ve seen or heard from is viewing this as an unprecedented situation and refunding in full.

Venue not refunding? As in the city or entity that owns the facility not refunding?

OR

The tournament/TD not refunding on a canceled tournament?

As for venues, I have not seen the issue. We put on three 36 to 60 team local/regional exposure tournaments and several camps per year and I have not seen a single venue refuse to refund the money for deposits or that had been paid in full. All the language in the contracts said "non-refundable" but they know the deal and are not being butts about it. A couple even refunded the deposit and let us "pencil in" a later date for the event, some offered to move the deposit to a later date and refund if the logistics did not work out.

Tournaments / TD? Well, most of my dealings are on the exposure side and there is one that is coming up in June that insists the event is going to happen and college coaches will be there recruiting OR they will simulcast (which is NOT what we paid $1,300 for). If they push it, it will probably be the end for them. They should have event insurance as big as the event is and there are mechanisms they can use to keep them whole on the money side, other than stealing the money from the teams and organizations that have supported them for years.

We are all walking on "new ground" but it is not hard to do the right thing.

Interesting simulcast.
Agree not the same as being there. Yet adds opportunity for non attending colleges coaches,... Or fans for that matter...to view.

Fewer crowds?

Better than nothing and I have no idea how different coaches evaluate players, but if they are anything like me evaluating my DD they would need to have a camera pointed directly at the player they were looking at the the whole time
