I just heard from a friend whose kid plays 10U Rec ball north of Houston. He said that their league is gonna start back up in May and All stars are a go too. Wow. That's crazy.

So Cal
Use this time on your soap box to create memories and an altenitive plan to avoid your pending devastation. If a high school season is that important maybe a new hobby is in order.

You have a young lady, who has probably been playing softball from an early age, and has probably dedicated a whole lot of her time and effort to developing her skills in the game. She's probably one of the best players in her area because she has worked her @$$ off for all those years, and softball is probably one of the defining activities in her life. Now, she's in the final season of playing on a team that represents not just her and her teammates, but also her classmates, her school, and her home community. She's the only one of the current team who has worn the jersey 4 years in a row, and the team is expected to be a contender for a State Championship title - something that only 1 team in the whole state will achieve. Sure, the team won the State title last year, but it's extra-special when it's your senior year. This year was her one and only chance to have all those things come together...and the rug got pulled out from under her.

I would absolutely expect her to be emotionally devastated. This isn't a flaw. This is the reaction of a passionate and dedicated player who gives a damn.

As that player's dad - who has been right beside her since her softball journey started all those years ago - I would feel pretty emotional, too. And then I would help her regain her focus for whatever the path ahead is.

Hopefully, that path includes more softball.

Perfectly said. Thanks Eric.

I don't know if anyone can really overstate the impact this situation has had on the high school seniors, even the ones who don't play spring sports. They're losing (in many cases) their prom, their graduation ceremony, and the opportunity to be the kings and queens of the school one last time. Spring break, senior cut day, all the things you look forward to for four years. For some players, this was their last opportunity to play ball with their friends, to be captains of the team, get a shot at an all-county or all-state accolade, and maybe go all the way and win a state title.

For the ones who have dedicated many, many hours of their lives to get to this point, it's a huge deal. My daughter will go on to play in college next year, and hopefully have more opportunities to excel on the field. But this year promised to be special, and it's going to hurt if it's canceled.

People react and grieve in many different ways. Just because it’s not the way you (general you) would react doesn’t mean it’s wrong or unhealthy. Heck, if it weren’t for my sense of humor getting me through some devastating situations I would have burned out and left my line of work 20 years ago.

I feel bad for all the 2020 seniors. All the other athletes have at least one more year. So they can work at home to improve for 2021, but the 2020 seniors, for many, this was their last year playing organized sports..... forever.....I feel for them. For us old folks we understand it's really not that important in the grand scheme of life, but for an 17/18 year old their senior year is a big deal........ On a good note.....I am enjoying the sales replacing everything that needs to be replaced at huge discounts....YEA!! YEA!!

We look back as adults and have the benefit of years of experience to define our worlds. We often forget that in our school years, that is the only world we know.

(Man, I hope that sounds good in black and white as it did in my head! ;) )

USA Softball offers a 23U division that has faltered over the years. Any chance they see an increase in teams next year as these girls come back since they didn’t get a “last” season?

Agree! Everyone should be able to respond/react in their own way!
Words are communicated differently.
Forum blogs dont always reveal intensions well.

My considerations towards the situation are WE ALL are experiencing the situation.
To each individual in this diverse world
wish us all
peace, strength, patience, good health, and a positive mindset!

Have been watching an array of movies including cheesy
sci-fi. Killer clowns, the blob, giants ants, angry reptiles,....
Mixing in good humor movies and video's of students working on drills and mechanics!...which remind me we do have a goal ;)

:) Where there is a will there is a way!

My DD is the only senior on a team that won the State Championship last year and was favored to do it again this year. Needless to say, if this season is canceled, she (and I) will be devastated.

my daughter is one of only two seniors that start. The we’re ranked 1 or 2 depending on the poll. If they don’t finish the season, she will be devastated too. She’s hit, run and worked out everyday. We just got back from the field working fielding...all in the prayer that she will get to play her sr. season.

shes been calling the other girls telling them to keep working and stay in shape because if they do play it will be a whirlwind and the team that’s in shape will win.

Im praying they start back first week in may.

I just read a article here in NY saying if we could get back to school by May 1st, we could play a full 18 game season, if mid May, we could play a 12 game season, if by June 1st, no season. A bit of hope, but I still say we not going back at all this year.
Live on Long Island and have heard some of the rationale on trying to get season going but truly believe we need to look at big picture. Sucks especially for seniors who are going to lose their last opportunity at competitive sports. Just dont see it happening. All of us unfortunately must deal with this now so that the highest % of people will be around in the future to continue on and play in the future.
