Related question from a 10U coach.

When you want to intentionally walk a batter, do you need to throw the 4 pitches? I've never witnessed this or asked.

Not in HS. Our leadoff has been intentionally walked numerous times and the HC just tell the umpire and umpire tells her to take the base.

That's what I thought. And when I first saw that (in a video), I was a bit bummed.

I kinda like making the pitcher and catcher throw those pitches. Especially with runners on base.

Do they feel it just helps speed up the game?

I guess so. And you never know what could happen if they throw!

No way am I loading the bases unless the bottom of the lineup is really bad for the other team. I would probably play it straight up with the corners coming home and trying to get out giving up 1 at the worst instead of giving them a chance to put up a crooked number.

I'd pitch to her, but they'd all be high fastballs to get her to pop up. She wouldn't get anything hittable that she could do anything with.

Have meeting with team at mound. Goal is to work out of this but if we give up 1 run that is it, we can chase 1 in the bottom half but we take outs when we have them and we are not giving them the opportunity to make this a big inning and scoring multiple runs. I think you have to concede that they have gotten into an enviable position to score but you do everything you can to limit their advantage to only 1 run. and sorry but ground ball double play and 2 out no one on down 1 run looks better than bases loaded no outs and tied. also in the 7th and first and third and no out in a hs championship game likely means my ace is on the mound and fading so thinking i have a pitcher to get me out of this jam is not too high on my mind.

GoGC....what happened? What strategy was chosen and what was the result? I’m speculating you disagreed with the coaching decision? Definitely not a one size fits all and your gut definitely comes into play.
