I rarely hit bombs, and when I do only when pulling

This thread isn't about me, but about a hitter I know. I believe this is happening because the hitter is rolling over and the swing is around the ball, instead of inside and through the ball. This hitter has hit line drives to center or opposite field, but never ever hit a bomb. Quite often the ball leaves the bat with a lot of side spin and dies early. Again I believe the hitter isn't staying inside and through the ball. Instead they hitting around the ball and cutting across it. Thoughts?

Impossible to say for sure without seeing her swing but the symptoms you list certainly lead one to believe that your analysis is correct. I will say though that you can not hit through the ball but still be inside of it so your thoughts could be off a little bit. If she slices the ball when going up the middle or to RF, she is definitely not hitting through it but may not be casting. You can stay inside of the ball and still swing around your body instead of through the ball.

Could be so many things. Wrong bat path created by -

1. Merry Go Round Shoulder Rotation
2. Leaking hands creating a bad sequence OR knob not facing catcher at load creating more of a pull across swing.
3. Swinging down and across created by taking hands to the ball instead of turning the barrel to the ball OR locking rear arm to the side instead of releasing it through OR rolling wrists into the ball out front instead of turning the barrel in back
4. No inward turn into the back hip (coil) so the swing becomes more of an arms swing OR no unloading the backside so the swing becomes more of an arms swing

Other than that it's probably a perfect swing! (kidding)

I don't know about you, but if a kid is hitting bombs with regularity, I generally don't care what part of the fence they go over. The runs still count the same.

Also...what lhowser said.

LOL, I hear ya. I don't think I explained myself very well. The hitter rarely hits bombs.. and the occasional time it does happen it's a dead pull, never to the big part of the park

I think it's this issue.. "locking rear arm to the side instead of releasing it through". This is some thing that I've noticed and tried to correct. Having trouble fixing it, and I am thinking it's a byproduct of something else because the hitter realizes this is not an ideal position to be in. And I think the underlying issue might be "Merry Go Round Shoulder Rotation"... pins the arm against the torso

That was one of my DD's regular issues. She is very good but could always be better because this is a big limiter. Could be the Merry Go Round shoulders. We also gained success by using a hammering finish with the front arm (after early turning the barrel onto past) which lengthened the front back arm. Just a couple of thoughts from experience

Funny you mentioned that. We started isolating the front arm with an hammering type motion.. even picked up a hammer and I asked her to hammer the ball off the tee from a titled position.

It was kind of an experiment with us but I have liked the results. It seemed to help the back arm path issue. Also asked her to try and go middle, middle/opposite for a bucket of balls and that helped too.

My DD has a similar issue - she puts one or two a game over the fence foul left but has never hit one over center. I feel it is related to timing on her lower half.
