"The whole point in I/R and brush is to whip... the change should not have whip."

James, I'm going to argue that you may have that whip with a knuckle-change, and it's even desirable with that pitch. While many experts abhor the knuckle-change, a main advantage is that you can throw it full speed with arm-whip. It will not throw fast. So, while some would argue that the batter will see the raised fingers, I would argue an offsetting advantage is that full speed arm-whip release. And, if were not talking about D-1 or top elite travelball, I don't see all that many batters who are able to identify the raised fingers. While some hate it, the knuckle change is one of the easiest (maybe the easiest) change-up to throw.
My dd used a knuckle change for 7 years. The only way you could see the raised fingers was in a picture. No one in all that time looked like they identified the pitch and was sitting on it.

It seems my DD’s spin on her ‘flip’ where she releases it more like the cup of water is more 2-8 or 3-9 left to right as the catcher see it. Only a couple rotations but speed has got to be 60-70% of fastball. And to me the speed would be more important. I am assuming it is hard to get any movement on a slow pitch like that anyway.

12/6 spin helps. The more spin, the better...

The speed difference is helpful, especially against lower level hitters. As you start to face higher level hitters the drastic decrease in spin rate will be obvious to them and allows them to reload their swing.

Thanks for the clarification. Are there any examples out there of someone throwing a good change with high spin rate? I am just struggling trying to understand how to tell DD how to add spin to the change up.

Also would like to understand how to get this? What grip and release to use for a 12/6 spin changeup? I guess I was assuming the was more the drop ball. Thanks again. I will try to film my DD release when I get a chance as it may be easier to break it down from a video.

It is essentially a slower drop if it has 12-6 spin. Which of course is ideal if you also throw a hard drop. The ideal change spins very similar to one of your hard pitches. Look at Cat Osterman for a good example. Gourley also throws a change with really high spin rate but spins more like a curve.

Thanks, either I am looking in the wrong spot or I’m just an idiot as I cannot find specific videos with either of them throwing the change. I suppose I can go thru a ton of video but was just hoping someone had a clip. I found Sarah Pauly slow mo and she looks to be bringing the thumb into hip and releasing like the horseshoe with a limited side spin. The ball seems to fall out of her grip vs aggressively putting spin on it. Maybe the drop change and curve change are more off speeds vs true change up?

My DD throws a backhand change which depending on how much she cuts it across her body can have 6/12 spin (flip change) or side spin (curve spin). She struggles to get her regular pitches above 20 rps but for whatever reason her CU is always 23-26 rps and helps with the speed deception.

It is the same CU that Mr Hillhouse shows and describes if you want to do a search on it.

Thank i have watched his videos in the past and he focused on not giving anything away and using the same motion. So the across the body change looks the same as a fastball.

This was the first change we tried to do and based on slow motion review we could never get DDs hand around enough on release to make it happen. I would believe the ball is already gone out of the grasp before this could happen. As I truly don’t believe I have ever seen a video of a change like this. I struggle to think it’s possible. If anyone could show a video of this pitch that would be great. Thanks in advance.

Just as Fastpitch dad said my daughter normally runs 17-19 revs but her CU is a pretty consistent 23. Has same spin axis as her drop curve and when you put the two pitches side by side video can’t tell the difference between them. She started CU by trying to throw a flip change and it sort of morphed in to something a little different but results have been good so haven’t messed with it.
