Tonight, we ended our high school season. We did not go out as I'd like but that is another story. After 32 years, I retired this week. I gave the state 340 sick days and so, will have full retirement or 34 years of teaching service. (I also had 108 days beyond that that I could have used but did not.) This has been a great run. I know some on this site know my coaching resume and it is something. I had a group come to me today to say that they are going to push for me to enter our state's coaching hall of fame in 3 sports but the fact is that I was a nobody and so, will never make it. I did get to coach some outstanding players and work with outstanding coaches.

Many of you who were around following my daughter's career know that I resigned my HC Baseball position to watch her play in high school. At that time, I was the HC in 3 sports and just worn out. BB's softball HC resigned and they came to me to ask me to coach the softball team. I did not want to do so. I wanted to watch my child play and besides, she was "Coach Butler's Daughter" all of her life and didn't deserve the criticism and hatred she received because she was my daughter. BB and a bunch of her teammates came to me in February and asked me to take the team. That season started at the end of February and so, the school was desperate to find a coach. I had coached all of these girls in TB. So, we took the position. Some members here would be appalled that they asked a teacher to be a coach. I know the local guy working any other job was more qualified than a teacher. When BB went to college, I resigned to watch her there but had to coach others sports. LOL Anyway, when BB ended her career back I went into softball as the JV Coach and Hitting Coach. Tonight that might have ended. BTW, BB is now a HS an MS coach. She is a teacher. Somehow, I guess she got dumber since she earned that teaching degree. She probably has forgotten how to coach. I am really proud of her and getting to see her work with hitters is so neat. A few here have seen her work as a coach.

As the end approached, I realized that I didn't want to stop. I heard of a job opening in a nearby state and took that job. I don't think I will be able to coach any more. For any of you who are reading this and have an opportunity to coach HS, you will have extreme highs and lows. You have to coach the players you get. You have to really know how to coach and I mean you have to know the entire game. It has been blast doing this. I will wrap up this post by saying that I have coached HS at the highest levels and have coached internationally. The thing is, it was always the kids. The players had to buy into what I coached. The players had to commit to a system despite all of the outside influences. I admire all of my players and know that my success was really their success and I got to go along for the ride.

It sounds like you love the game of softball and enjoy teaching.
Kudos for all your time & effort to develop all the young women you worked with.
It sounds like you have earned some R & R. Good luck to you on whatever you decide to pursue.

I am almost certain last year you stayed after and helped give tips to our high school pitcher after one game during the 2018 season. I always enjoy reading your posts and responses, enjoy your retirement!

I get asked to help players a lot by various coaching staffs and am always happy to help some young player.

Congratulations Coach! That's incredibly impressive and you should be very proud. I'm sure your daughter and family are. All the best.
