This week for the first time, my girl found out that the 3 schools she wants to go to most, USC, Pepperdine, UC Irvine, don't even have softball programs.
All 3 have Baseball programs, USC has the most successful baseball program in ncaa history. It was shocking to both of us that those 3 schools don't field softball teams.
On the way home I asked her what schools she will come up with in 2 weeks when she meets with the recruiting coordinator again, she said those 3 schools have 5 years to start softball.

If she wants to broaden her frustration she can look in to Rice and Vanderbilt. :-/

Have her go to collegeboard.org and filter with varsity sports/softball as one of the criteria as she starts to develop a list of schools to minimize some of the angst.

Identifying the schools is step 1. Wait till the coordinator asks her write/email X number of schools. Organization and good record keeping will assist with sanity.

Rice and Vanderbilt are out of state. She said she doesn't want to be a traitor and go play college softball for fans from a different state.

She's obviously spent too much time around me and her cousin

Looks like Stanford, Loyola Marymount, UC Santa Barbara.... may have to do unless her schools get on the ball

Let Texas girls go to Texas schools

California girls belong at California Universities

CA has plenty of good schools with softball programs. That said it is silly to choose a school based upon such a parochial view likely driven by
the worship of late teen, early 20's college football players who don't give a rat's rear about your loyalty...

I wish this was truly the dumbest reason I have heard about not exploring other colleges I have heard. It is in the top ten though.

If you don't take the ego/reputation BS and 'what other people think' out of the equation, then your DD (and you and her family) is very possibly not making the best decision she could make. It isn't their journey and it really is none of their business unless that person is helping her in her recruiting journey - and then they should not be thinking or saying anything like this. It is your DD's journey and hers will be unique to her. Don't compare her journey to another. Never automatically rule out a school or a type of school.

And I am not saying she shouldn't end up at a Cali school. If she wants to go there, great. But do it because she wants to stay close to home, or it is the best education for her, or the best opportunity or the best financial fit or it is her dream school. Not just because she happens to live in-state.

For the record the dumbest reason I heard for not considering a school for education/softball was that they didn't have a football team.

When comparing schools make sure you use "out of pocket costs" vs. "scholarship value" when comparing offers. A $25K scholarship to a $50K school is still $25K/year out of pocket, while a $10K scholarship to a $20K school is only $10K/year...
