When I was coaching a 12u travel team, we had this one player that just seemed ahead of everyone else. Hitting, fielding, running, etc. She was on the small side, but she could do just about anything and had unlimited potential, at least that is what I thought. One of the sweetest girls you could ever meet as well. Unfortunately she had a mother that was too interested in drama, complaining, and creating turmoil in the bleachers among the other parents. After that 12u season, this player left and went to another team. Apparently she worked her way from team to team until she found herself back on our team at 1st year 16u. I knew the family, and knew the reputation, but after having a private meeting with them, the other coach and I decided to give her a shot. At that point in time, my DD was just developing a serious interest in playing college softball, so I met with the team, asked them who else was interested, and then scheduled a meeting with those parents to discuss some of the awesome information I learned on this site and other places. Most of the parents were very receptive. But this parent seemed to know better, was quite rude at the meeting, and decided to follow their own plan. No big deal. We moved on from there.

Fast forward to last night. I get a text from DD who was just speaking with a friend of hers at a neighboring college. Apparently this player was trying out for that school's team. She apparently did well at tryouts and strictly based on talent, was good enough to make the roster. But the head coach met with some of the older players at the end of tryouts to discuss each of the incoming freshmen. While the consensus was that this player had the talent, she also had quite an attitude. She was rude to the other players, arrogant about her skills, and just didn't mesh well with the rest of the team. As a result, she was cut. It's really a shame and I feel terrible for this young lady. I still believe she has a tremendous amount of potential, but her softball career is probably over at this point.

Over the years I've seen several players not taken due to parental drama. The kids were great. But, the parent(s) were a deal breaker. The organization my DD played in would have current player parents sit in the stands during tryouts and listen to the parents to see who were potential trouble.

A player my DD played with a long time ago had a dad who was a a complete moron. Big mouth, drama starter, knew it all. The head of the program told the player the only reason she was being released was because of her dad. And if he died she was welcome back.

That's terrible...on both parts. Both men should be ashamed
