My daughter just received an offer from a division II school where normal tuition is 34k a year with room and board. My question is what amount of athletic money would be considered a good offer? She's a catcher... Thanks for replies!!

It is the out-of-pocket that is important. 50% of 60k still leaves you 30k out of pocket... 20% of 10k leaves you 8K out of pocket.... so who got the better deal???

You need to go through the schools financial aid people and see what other money is available - grants, academic money, summer work programs, etc, etc. If there is additional money there that again reduces your out-of-pocket. You need to know your out of pocket # to know if you can afford it - if you can then you have a good offer :)

Coach should be walking you into admissions/finance - they will have relationships there that will help.

As for % for catcher: in D2 there is a ridiculously small scholarships available so anything near 50% is probably the best a coach can do.

DD got an offer from a d2 school. It amounted to approximately 40% of tuition and 25% of overall costs. She told her that was the amount she had reserved for the position she was recruiting her for. She told her to go see the admissions people and see how much aid she could get from them. She said after that she would sit down and see if she could give her more.
Sounded like a coach with sound business principles and a plan to me. I was impressed. Why offer more scholarship money if the kid can a lot of help from the academic side.
The offer came right after dd hit a really big homerun. Coaches talk a lot about what kind of kid they want to recruit but fair or not HRs get their attention.

That is also quite true on competitive / travel teams. Some coaches will put up with all kinds of BS from kids who hit dingers. They'll talk about what character traits they value in players, and even dismiss the value of HRs in conversation compared to a good OBP, but then celebrate players with attitude who can occasionally hit one over.

Gotta say, was surprised at the "avg" amount for our most local school. It's a D1, but private university. However, it's only one of 9 schools in state that has the major my DD is currently interested in, so she's started to show interest in their program. We only live 10 miles from it so she wouldn't have to have room and board.

Some schools require freshman players to live in dorms.
