Any way to find out if a college is already set at a particular position?

Hello all. Anyone have experience with trying to find out if a particular college/university team is already set at a particular position (ex. we've got all the 2021 pitchers we want), so one can avoid potentially wasting time/money on their camp? Is that a question that is properly put to a coaching staff in an email? If so, should it come from the player or the travel coach? Would any schools even answer it?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Unless I completely misunderstand it they technically can't talk recruiting until junior year of HS now. They are not supposed to circumvent the rule by using third parties such as TB coaches. It will be interesting to see how it works in practice.

I think both the player and the travel coach can ask about it. My guess is it is a pretty common question they get asked. I don't know how they will answer now with the new rules, but I think it is very common for players to ask them this when they talk to them at a camp. I know DD's travel coach has had these conversations with coaches about DD and other players on her team.

From my understanding, college coach can still answer is player is on there list, only thing they can't say is where on that list they are.

You can purchase a spread sheet from Cathi Aradi. She sends out a questionnaire to college coaches asking what positions they are actively recruiting. Not all reply but a lot do. She takes that info and puts it in a spreadsheet.

We used Goldfastpitch.com to track which schools had pitchers committed in my DD's recruiting class. I think FloSoftball still has a verbal list, but it is on the pay side of the site. The changes in recruiting rules may change how effectiveness of our strategy.

I would suggest having your college services contact for your travel team contact them to understand where they stand in the recruiting process as "we" have a "2021 Shortstop" that would be a good fit for your program and wanted to know if it makes sense for them attend the camp?

They won't say yes to simply get your money $150-$300 for the camp. They will probably say yes if they know who they are and are interested in her or say don't bother as we are full for that class or she doesn't have the skill set they are looking for...or they may ask to send a skills/game video if they haven't seen her already. If you do go, you should also have the travel contact ask for an post camp assessment if the coach(es)are willing so you can understand if it makes sense to keep writing them or drop them in the priority of schools.

So, could a player say to a HC at a camp, "How are you looking for 2022 catchers at this point?" Fair game or no?

NCSA coached DD1 to say “when will you be done recruiting for the class of 20xx” / great Q&A Question to ask at end of clinic, etc. Don’t see why you couldn’t insert position. Unless it’s a P or C position I’d be generic.

Use the lists and reports to narrow down your choices. If your DD has a dream school though, don’t give up on based on who’s coming in. There’s so much turnover that if she can convince the coach she’s a good fit for his team he’ll find a spot for her.
