I totally agree. The main goal for her when she goes on these visits is just to get a feel for the campus and the coaches, she is looking for a certain atmosphere. She doesn't know what field of study she may be interested in just yet, so looking at academics of the school seems pointless to us as of right now. All she knows as of now is that she wants to attend an out of state school . She does well with her academics so if an out of state school doesn't workout she should be able to attended an in state school pretty much free of charge, if her academics continue on the certain path. Out of state tuition is so high that softball money will be a priority, if she doesn't change her mind about going out of state.

Plenty of school will give you out of state tuition wavier for athletes.

Did you check that with the coach? This is case with D-2 schools, because they have only 7.5 scholarships. When a D-2 school in Alabama offered my daughter, I asked the coach what would my out of pocket expense me. She said, it will be like a savings account where they would get all the scholarships they could for my daughter, including out of state wavier, her academic money, pell grant etc and then the softball scholarship would cover the rest.

I stand corrected. It’s not offered at DD’s school and my understanding was that it counted toward scholarship dollars. I found several schools, primarily in Georgia and Florida, that do offer out-of-state tuition waivers specifically for athletes. I have no idea how it works, but you’re right.

Any idea how to find out what schools will do this?

You will need to ask the coach about this. Schools do this to stay competitive and to attract good recruits.

One school that made an offer to DD, brought that up. The way the coach explained it to us, sounded like some falsifying of documentation was involved to a degree. I didn’t feel to good about it. The school probably didn’t offer it, so you had to trick the state.
