My DD is currently in her freshman year at a NAIA school 8 hours away, playing softball under a NLI. She is strongly considering transferring to a local mid major D1 school for mainly academic reasons. Her current coach knows that she is leaving - it is a small, newer softball program and he is thankful for her help getting it on the map and helping get the team into the conference.

DD is considering trying for a walk-on spot on the D1 team. When can she start emailing/talking to the coach? Would a better approach be for her old TB coach to talk to her first?

Thanks for the help...

Unless the former TB coach has a long standing relationship with the D1 coach, your DD needs to take the initiative. Having already played in college, her TB career and her TB coach is ancient history. If someone other than her were to reach out to the D1 coach the one that makes the most sense is her current NAIA coach. When my DD transferred to SC her coaches at Chipola were instrumental in making that happen. They made the phone calls and got SC on their Fall schedule. Her previous TB Coach / Pitching Instructor, yours truly had nothing to do with it.

Because her current coach knows and seems to be supportive she's in good shape- that's half the battle. Plus, NAIA schools have different rules so I believe she should be free to contact the DI coach directly. She should probably check with her current coach/AD for advice- I'm sure they've helped student athletes transfer before. When my daughter transferred, coaches/administration on both sides were helpful- ultimately, most people in college sports want happiness for student athletes. The DI coach may want to see a release from her current coach. Good luck.
