I heard from a very reliable source this weekend that the new recruiting rules could go into effect as early as April 1 so I wouldn’t put any of the actions you need to take off for too long.

I like the bit about who runs the tour.

When my DS took a tour of the college he now attends, the head coach took us on a tour of all the athletic facilities, and then took us to the admissions office where he could personally introduce us to the folks handling DS' file. OK, that was only a D-III school, but it showed a VERY high level of interest from the head coach.

One thing that really impressed me was the attitude of the HC towards his athletes. College is a big step for kids. I really got the impression talking to this coach that he cared about his athletes. My DS is not as independent as many other young adults, so it was very important to me that DS would have a caring coach looking after him. DS is a senior now, and everyone is still very happy with the arrangement. DS has a great coach, coach has a hard-working athlete, family doesn't have to worry so much about our kid.

I could be wrong but I do not believe these new recruiting rules will change much, except for the fact that they can not speak to the PLAYERS younger than Juniors. So I guess I am not understanding the reason for trying to pressure someone into an offer. Am I missing something here??

My understanding is that no money can be discussed with anyone including travel ball coaches until Sept 1 of the player’s junior year. The coach can express degrees of interest but money can’t be discussed, although I’m sure there will be those that find ways around that.

Congrats DRDRODD! Just be aware, when going through this process with my DD, EVERY new school we visited became her new dream school;)

LOL yes I kind of figured that is how this process would go. Before we started this process she stated what she would like to find in a school and what type of setting she was looking for. This school actually has everything that she wanted. I just want her to do everything in her power that she can to keep a good rapport with the coaching staff.

My $0.02....
1) Confirm your DD loves the school and not just the coaching staff.
2) Coaching staffs can change before your DD gets there or while she is there.
3) Let the coaching staff know your DD is very interested, but avoid the temptation to overdo it.
4) Keep the coaching staff updated on your DD's schedule and accomplishments.
5) Do not put all of her eggs in one basket.
6) Your DD needs at least a top-5 that she is communicating with regularly: 2 dream schools, 2 average and 1-2 fall back options.
7) Treat recruiting like a game of poker and do not get too emotional one way or another.
8) A coach's job is to sign as many quality players as they can so it is in their best interest to sign each player for as little as possible.
9) Use total out of pocket costs when comparing offers.
10) Schedule an unofficial visit for a tour of the academic and athletic facilities before the recruiting rules change.
a) a private tour shows more interest than a group tour
b) head coach providing tour shows more interest than an AC
c) AC leading the tour shows more interest than someone from administration

Agree 100% based on our experience. There were several schools where DD was communicating with coaches right until they departed. Not once did the coach reveal that they were leaving. Rule of thumb: Fall in Love with the school, not the coach, not the SB program. Ask yourself, would you want to attend if the coach was no longer there? or if she couldn't play softball? If the answer is yes, then she's found her dream school. Good luck!

There’s different degrees of coaches love you.

Did they invite you to an unofficial?
Give you the coaches phone number?
Ask for you summer schedule?

They LOVE you if you get the top two. They’re interested. Last one only means if we’re at that tourney we may stop and look.
