Well, she certainly painted herself into a corner! The coach at the school she has had as #1 on her list and that she wants to go to more than anything just told her No Thanks, too late. I'm done recruiting for your class. I have everyone I need. DD is devastated. "all my hard work was for nothing" I think she had already decided that she will be accepted and get financial aid to enable her to attend this college. Now she is thinking her life is over.

Health issues kept her from making an official visit during the 4 weeks she was given, and when she couldn't do that, the coach shut the door.

Now I need to help DD dust herself off and get back in the game. Maybe I can use this recruiting snafu to give me leverage when negotiating fin aid.

as always, any advice will be greatly appreciated!

This is not so much for you and your DD, but more for others who are in a similar situation. While you want to give your DD as much responsibility and freedom to choose the school of their dreams. You can't fully depend on the judgement of a 17 YO young adult. They don't have the life experience to be able to remove themselves from the process emotionally or cerebrally. That's when the parents need to step in and have a frank conversation with their DD's and outline the next set of options. It may be emotional at the time, but it's better than letting them make a huge mistake.

very good point. this is the cold water in the face moment where we need to have a discussion (something that involves participation by both parents and student!) she has made her bed and now has to lie in it- which is probably best for her in the long run!

Great point there.

The next D3 coach that turns away a player during freshman fall open tryouts who is better than the players that they recruited will be the first to do so.

It’s almost never too late IMO. Just ask John Belushi if it was over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.

Dont forget juco's, plenty of very good players also come out of juco colleges. Forget the players name at the moment, but if memory serves there is only 1 college softball player that has 4 championship rings. She has 2 from Phoenix College as a juco player and 2 from UofA as a D1 player. And the real bottom line is, the softball isnt the important part, the education is.

My daughter did 2 years of juco and was snapped up pretty quickly by a D1 school and got pretty much a full ride through the whole thing. No, it may not be as glamorous as going straight to a D1 school but again, the bottom line is it is the education not the softball that ultimately counts.
