Very true.

My DS rows for a D-III school. His coach was actively recruiting him. This particular school has their admissions and scholarship policies pretty much set in stone, but DS was a borderline case. His ACT scores were good enough for a substantial scholarship, but his grades were slightly below the cutoff point (although he raised his grades above the cutoff by the time he graduated HS). The school decided to give him a chance, since his JR and SR year grades were substantially higher than his frosh and soph year grades. Or maybe it was because of his ACT scores. Or maybe because the coach really, really wanted him on the team, and went with us to the admissions office.

All I know is DS was a borderline case, the coach spoke highly of him, he was admitted, and got academic scholarship money.

It helps to hear stories like this.

One of the reasons my DD 1 quit softball was to participate in a time-intensive program that gave her a full academic scholarship. But then, my DD 1 plans ahead in a way that is unusual even for adults, let alone teenagers. She is a pre-med, and while she was in high school she was working part time to save money for med school.

Amazing to hear such a positive story.

My DD1's first and only goal is to play softball for as long as she can. She dreams she can take it to a level beyond college. I have doubts she will be able to do that.

Don't kill her dream. She is 13! Let her dream of playing multiple sports. She will figure it all out.

1) I don't think anyone answered yet, but I am 99% sure you can't "stack" athletic scholarships. I know that football players who play multiple sports have to be on a football scholarship so that football coaches and unsavory ADs don't award other scholarships to football players so they can have more than 85 scholarship players.

2) There are girls capable of playing multiple sports at the D1 level but it has to be figured out during the recruiting process. If you are a good enough player, a coach will let you do it to get you to commit to their team. The fall/spring dual sport athlete is the most common but I have seen a girl playing hoops and softball and both coaches were supportive because they both wanted her on the team. However, that same girl had offers from other schools in both sports but almost all those offers were single sport only so her school choices were severely limited by her desire to play two sports. If a player is THAT good the softball coach won't mind her missing fall practice and exhibition games to play soccer or something else. It's not like they are goofing off. They are lifting and conditioning and playing a sport.

Good link that explains multiple sport athletes and D1 scholarship rules.

I guess my main concern is that the amount of time spent on the other sport would be better spent on the sport she eventually plays in college, since they players she's competing with are playing year round in both sports and getting more work in to be even better. Yes, there is some overlap with field hockey to softball (e.g. speed, agility, upper body strength, conditioning, mental toughness, etc. ), but not much vice versa, and very different skill sets.

Thanks for input though!
