Gotta tell a story. When my DD was a rising 10th grade she caught the eye of an ACC assistant coach at a showcase in Atlanta. The school flew their pitching coach down to watch DD pitch a HS game three weeks later and she invited us to do an unofficial visit the day before their Winter camp. We received the red carpet treatment with a full blown tour of all facilities - academic and athletic. DD killed it at the camp - pitched well and knocked the snot out of the ball while batting. This team had MAJOR problems with pitching and my rose colored glasses thought DD could probably help them right then if she was eligible. So Sunday after the camp the assistant coaches took us to tour the softball locker room and administrative offices, then we had a meeting in the head coaches office. When we met with the head coach he basically asked if we had any questions, DD said "no, the assistant coaches have done a great job showing us around and explaining everything", to which he replied "Ok, thanks for coming", then he stood up, shook our hands and we were out the door. To this day I still do not know what happened. Not sure if they lost interest or if we did something to upset them.

Karma bit them in the rear the following year when the entire coaching staff was fired...

JAD- you should have said something to the coach like-'DD is interested in this school and what does she have to improve upon to become a member of your team?" I have seem in the past that is what they are looking for to see "if" you are interested. They are obviously interested in her if invited for an unofficial visit.

An "unofficial visit" is a college is interested but wants to see if A.- yall are interested B.-To get to know yall to see if maybe you would be a good fit.
Usually you will not be offered anything on an "unofficial visit". It should normally followed up with an Email to the Coaching staff by your dd to tell them of her interest level and thanking them for the opportunity to see the college. Be aware each division of NCAA and NAIA have their own rules (laws) about replying directly to potential recruits. The "official visit" is where a firm offer will be made..

To be honest it was our first unoffiical visit and we were a little awestruck and dumbfounded at the same time. No doubt we would have played it differently if we had it to do over again, but it could have been Karma looking out for us...

They can't go on official visits until their senior year so obviously most offers are made before the official visit.

This is not necessarily true. While our first "unofficial" visit did not go according to plan (see above), DD was offered at every other unofficial visit we took. I think most coaches prefer to offer a player in person vs. waiting for a follow up email or conversation. A player can only take official visits when she is a senior (limit 5), so most deals are done on unofficial visits and the official is more of a "dog and pony" show with all of the signees there together.
