as others have said, debt free is very nice to be when you graduate or at least a reasonable debt. If we were talking about Yale or Princeton it might be a little different. The only other issue would be if you really wanted to live in a certain city you may get an advantage if you go to certain private schools who have a strong alumni presence in certain fields, but truthfully most people have no idea which school is better.

As parents, when our kids were born and for the next 18 years we should have been setting aside money for a 4-yr college so we do not have to make a choice between A or B.....

What a load of elitest crap.

I assume this is directed to my post. Setting aside a small amount of money each month in a tax-deferred college account (529 plan) for 18 years builds a nice little next egg for college. I don't consider that "elitist crap" especially when you consider the amount of money we spend on travel softball, equipment, etc?

Person comes looking for advice because there is an educational opportunity his family must evaluate. You have no idea of the circumstances they faced over the last 18 years. It could be a single parent, there could have been an illness, etc. And with 20/20 hindsight you offer a condescending lecture on what he should have done, parental responsibility, and financial management. So yeah I think that fits what most would consider elitist crap.

Many parents visit this site and are looking for advice and the reason I said "we parents". A long time ago someone told me about 529 plans and it has been a wonderful college saving program for my family. If the OP is offended I apologize.

We did...but this young lady is thinking of graduate school so unless you set aside a tremendous amount of money it's not going to cut it.

no offense taken to the advice to save ahead. But $100,000 is a lot of money whether you've got it or not. Question is still about the same. Unless you can afford to go anywhere.
