Hello,

DD is a 2021 non-pitcher who has been attending some college camps. She is probably a fringe D1 player (non-P5) based on her athletic/softball ability.

Regarding emailing coaches, she had a question that I thought was worth raising here. When emailing after a camp to say thank you, should she email only the head coach, send separate (but similiarly worded) emails to each member of the coaching staff she interacted with at the camp, or simply CC the assistant coaches when emailing the head coach? For the previous camps she has attended, she has sent separate emails to the HC and the assistants.

Thanks for any input you might have.

If she wants to stand out have her send some hand written thank you cards through the mail. It's much more personal and they will be impressed that she took the time to thank them in writing.

E-mail them all.

Also try to thank each and every one of them in person right after the camp if possible.

I agree with this 100%. Always thank them and then email them afterwards. It lets the coaches know who showed up for the camp and who showed up to be potential student athletes at the school.

My DD has got into the habit of emailing every coach her skills video before she shows up to the camp, then thanks them when its over and then emails them again asking what the next step is as a potential student there.

Don’t sell her short. Outside the top 25, P5 doesn’t mean much for softball. Their fields are a little nicer and the girls have a few more perks. The caliber of softball is similar to the mid-majors. If she can play D1, she can probably play for a P5 school.

Coogans - Yeah, she does this at every camp. While there's a line for the HC she goes and speaks to the assistants and by then she doesn't have to wait for the HC. Thanks for the reply. We'll keep emailing all of them.

Excellent point. Sometimes I waver back and forth on whether or not I view her as her Father or a legit evaluation. It's tough. We'll see.

I would recommend sending a separate email to each coach. Since there are only 3, maybe 4, it should not take that long, especially if it is a school that your DD is really interested in attending.

Hadn't thought of it in those terms. I think that you're correct in that after the top 25 that the top 100 has just as may mid-majors as P5's. But we have to remember that there are over 200 mid-major teams, about 300 D-1's overall, and some are pretty weak. My assessment would be that if you can play for a ''good'' mid-major, not just any mi-major, then you can play for a P5.

Here are the Massey Ratings preseason rankings, based on historical scores. Lots of mid-majors in the top 100, but you won't find any P5 teams in the bottom 100, not one whose coach will be employed for long. So even those that aren't very good are recruiting players that they believe can compete in the top 100.
