Can you go into more detail in regards to the "stipend"? I have heard of some very talented girls receive what is called a stipend included in their scholarship but I have no idea what that money is directed towards.

Stipends is something the NCAA came up with to allow schools to cover some of the additional living expenses for football players and it has trickled down to other sports via Title IX. It is my understanding that they money is allocated to the team and the coach can decide how the money is divided up between the players. Some coaches may give it all to their seniors. Some may use a sliding scale giving more to the upper class, some may divide it equally amongst all of the players.

There are a few different stipends.

- Players with room & board aid have long received a room & board stipend if they're living off-campus instead of on-campus. There are also meal stipends for those in a student apartment w/o a full meal plan.

- The new stipend JAD described covers more expenses up to the school's Cost of Attendance and is in response to law suits against the NCAA (e.g. O'Bannon). Each school determines its own Cost of Attendance according to federal regulations and that is the basis for calculating scholarship equivalences. If the school allows adjustments for regular students on an individual basis, they are allowed to do the same for student-athletes.

There is also money from the NCAA's Student Assistance Fund with restrictions on how schools use/distribute it.
