The top college for any student is the one where:
1. They will be happy.
2. They will be challenged.
3. They will take advantage of all that college offers

I say this because a lot of students can't get into the Top 100 schools or can't afford the Top 100 schools or can only afford the state college next town over while living at home and all too many of us think this is a major setback, but it isn't.

In case anyone is looking for more data points when making a decision on which college their DD should attend....

Forbes 2016 list of top colleges

I am always very skeptical about this sort of list, even though my undergraduate school is in the top 10; my grad school and DD 1's college are in the top 100. Some of the rankings seem WAY off. For example, Michigan is probably a little better than Michigan State, but the difference in rankings on this list is over 100 places. Doesn't seem to make much sense.

The "best" school for any kid differs.

DS' college, Milwaukee School of Engineering, didn't make this list, but it is a much better school for DS than many of the schools on the list.
At MSOE, he gets a great engineering education, has small classes taught by professors rather than TAs, and the school has a rowing team that is strong enough to be competitive, but weak enough he can be one of their best rowers, AND he loves the location.

MSOE would be a horrible place for DD 1. She is already taking some summer classes at Wisconsin, which is a MUCH better fit for HER. DS wouldn't do nearly as well at Wisconsin, and is much better off at MSOE.

schwabach's comment was right on the money.

Do you suppose the dollar amount listed includes everything you might encounter... ?

Per year, but it probably averages things like books and probably doesn't include lab costs that some degrees might have. Not to mention some of these schools have aggressive grant programs for low and even middle income students.
