Default How To Reprogram Your Mind (for Positive Thinking)

“If you keep obsessing about negative things, your mind will become conditioned to bring it up more and more often”

"Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, an hour, a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever."

Approach to hitting, pitching and life...

I'd love to see or hear any other videos, podcasts, books, etc., that people have found useful in maintaining a positive approach and mindset whether it be sports, business, relationships or whatever. What do you have?

An early influence in my life was a book I found buried in an old library table at my parents house (I don't ever remember seeing anyone in my family ever even looking at it back then) but I still have that copy.....The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale

I started this with our 12u and and continued with our 14's I've bought for all my players the book "Mentally Tough Teens, developing a winning mindset" by Justin Su'a. It's an easy read and each page takes less than 5 minutes a day. I've asked my players to read a page a day. My players love it, especially in todays 144 character & snapchat world.

Example page: TAKE THE INITIATIVE. If you see a need, fill it. If you walk by trash, pick it up and throw it away. Be a go-getter. Do things without being told to. Others might think you're trying to suck up, but you know your motives. You're doing things to become better and to help others become better. You don't need others to notice your hard work because you're not doing it for them--you're doing it for you."

Disclaimer-no affiliation with Su'a..just really love the book he put together. Has a good book for parents called "Parent Pep Talks". Has a daily podcast called Increase your impact. It's 5 days a week and short...less than 4 minutes. I've been having my staff in business listen to this as well.

    Lead the Field-Earl Nightengale

Mindset: the new psychology of success by Carol Dweck. Phd Standford University. Deals with growth and fixed mindsets. Can't recommend this one enough for coaches.

The Playbook-52 Rules to aim, shoot and score in this game called life- by Kwame Alexander- great for upper elementary/MS/early HS kids

    The Go-Getter-Peter B. Kyne

    Rhinoceros Success-Scott Alexander

See you at the top-Zig Ziglar

The Happiness Advantage - Shawn Achor

    Never Die Easy-Walter Payton

Excellent thank you Chris8! That's exactly the kind of stuff I was looking for... I'll be watching the video Knightsb posted with the kids tonight!

Keep 'em coming...this should be a valuable resource!

Chris8 - Justin is a great guy! I don't know him personally, but every time I have reached out through email or social media, he's been awesome at responding and having dialogue. I've given Mentally Tough Teens to every one of my players who will read it! They loved how it was written in small, almost daily chunks. He told me he wrote it for that very reason...for MS or HS students who have way to much to do and struggle to find long periods of time to devote to reading a book. It really is a great resource.

Tatonka - anything by Jon Gordon is great. Two of my favorites are The Carpenter and You Win In the Locker Room First. You can find a ton of his stuff in YouTube clips.

Inside Out Coaching by Joe Ehrmann is great.
As Chris mentioned, Mindset by Dweck is a great read focusing on her studies at Stanford in growth mindset.
Legacy by James Kerr is a great read about the culture of the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team.
Lead, for God's sake! by Todd Gongwer is a really good one about living for what's really important while chasing success.

Simon Sinek's talk Leaders Eat Last is incredible. Any of Sinek's stuff, really. Just search his name on YouTube and tons of stuff will come up.

Chris8 - thanks for the suggestions! You just refreshed my reading list. The older I get the more convinced I am (all things being equal) the difference in a teams success is working with the muscle between the ears.

this statement absolutely true, even sometimes when all things aren't equal.

Oh...also, the Focus 3 Podcast is a must listen if you're interested in mindset/culture development/leadership. Tim and Brian Kight are the best there are, working with the top corporations and teams in the country. They have a great social media presence, as well.

Alan Jaeger has a good book called Getting Focused, Staying Focused. It's sport neutral but a bit baseball oriented since he is a baseball guy.

Rick Peterson also has one called Crunch Time that is a short but good read.
