Parents create self-confidence in a child by allowing the child to make some (not all) decisions, and then allowing the child to experience the consequences (good or bad) from those decisions.
Helicopter parents never let the child make decisions or suffer negative consequences from the decisions, and the child becomes dependent on the parent.
Sports are great for allowing children to experience both success and failure.
