All High School Coaches Are Bad

I don’t disagree completely, I think it’s on coaches and parents that allow gifted athletes to get to that point. I’ve seen too many times and been guilty of it myself at letting some things slide because of their natural ability when I was actually doing them a disservice. They needed to be...

All High School Coaches Are Bad

I get it man. My kid was on a TB very briefly because they needed a catcher but the coaching was nonexistent plus he got an attitude about attendance even though I told him she was already on a rec team I was coaching. I get the parent part too. I got thrown into coaching and it was either I...

    Parents Attacking Umpires

I ran into a much less serious situation than the OP described but long story short the plate umpire and I talked about fan/player interaction with umps and basically about how now even players are chirping or giving silly looks when they don’t agree. Lo and behold, last inning my player is...

Team Rules~No player/parent interaction at the ballpark

I agree with you. Mine is 14u and is a catcher and even on teams I’ve coached as an assistant I would try to take a step back so she could be “coachable”. I’ll admit I probably wouldn’t have her on a team like they’re describing because I see things other coaches wouldn’t notice because I’ve...

Team Rules~No player/parent interaction at the ballpark

I’ve coached my daughter almost every season except when she was briefly on a TB team but I’m kinda torn on the rules you’re describing. I’ve personally never had an issue with parents talking to the players during games as long as it’s reasonable. At times I’ve had to ask parents to leave the...

    Question for coaches!

Granted, I’ve only coached rec ball but some of the programs I’ve been in were the equivalent of B level travel teams. With that said I’ve always encouraged players to ask. I’ve gone to practice early to work with players that were interested in pitching but had NEVER played the position to show...

    Hit by pitch

I’ve always taught my players if you KNOW you’re going to get hit and can’t avoid it turn. In my opinion it protects the ribs plus it’s an attempt to avoid. We had one year where they had the attempt to avoid rule but they were never called out they just weren’t awarded the base.

How should DD tell coach she doesn't pitch anymore?

I’m going to say this as respectfully as possible and readily admit I’ve never coached at the level you have as my experience has only been rec with some travel tournaments thrown in. With that said, I’d tell you flat out to go kick rocks and I doubt it would be exactly those words if you told...

Is this a viable method for catching?

Last season I had my daughter (14u) going with a knee down for stability and getting the low stuff. The biggest thing was timing just so she wasn’t tipping pitches. As far as throwing runners out it was a pretty balanced mix. Especially on low pitches they were focusing on making the throw from...

Scoring Disasters: The Flaws of Letting Unknowing Parents Keep Book

I get it, we had the same issue during our rec all star tournaments at the end of this season but it was much more intentional. The person keeping the book and GC was a disgruntled assistant coach and her husband was one of the active coaches for the team but she’d routinely give certain players...

    Daddy Ball

You’re absolutely right I’ve always been much tougher on my kid than anyone else and typically she would get into trouble for doing something once where others were constantly doing it. I just waited and used her as an example. I had one parent get upset because I made the whole team run foul...

    Terrible human being

It’s the same in our rec league most of the time we end up coaching a kid then she ends up on another team in the league. On our current team I coach 1st base and usually I’ll joke around with the first baseman and say something like if there’s a foul ball run over me just make sure it’s...
