    Discussion ???

This is the type of hitting instruction that continues to limit the power and consistency of softball hitters. In order to achieve optimal hitting rotational mechanics, the back elbow needs to remain relatively or even perfectly still during the rotation of the upper body. As soon as the elbow...

    Swing Feedback Older DD

I agree with inde53546 about her swing being "spinny". Sometimes, a hitter can be too precise. This hitter has a nice swing, but it is too controlled. She would benefit from a higher leg lift and weight transfer to her back leg. In this video, there is no real weight transfer, which is a...

Just when I'm ready to teach extention "Turn the Triangle" looks pretty good

I just saw this video on another thread. Cabrera's swing sure looks like full extension at impact to me. I often show my students videos of his swing to help make my point about how full extension is one of the keys to real power after the rotation of the body. Check it out... ESPN Sport...

Just when I'm ready to teach extention "Turn the Triangle" looks pretty good

First, I agree with much of what Jack Mankin teaches about rotational hitting mechanics. He understands where power comes from and how to transfer that power into the ball. However, he is wrong about extension. He is correct in his video that the elbows should stay the same distance apart as...

    bat speed

High school and college hitters who have solid rotational mechanics can achieve bat speeds in the low to mid 70s. It is rare for hitters to have bat speeds in the 80s. I have found that bat speeds for most high school and college hitters range between the mid 50s to the upper 60s, before they...

    Which one would go farther?

The distance the ball is hit should be the same, but the hitter who is "all arms" will be less consistent than the hitter who uses the entire body. This scenario is not very realistic, because if a hitter is effectively using her body to hit, then her bat speed will be much higher.

    12u - Latest Swing

Her swing at the beginning of this thread is much better than the latest video. The only change I would recommend at this point would be a little narrower stance and a slower load. The narrower stance will allow her to maintain her leverage better and she will be able to reach and drive outside...

    Rolling your wrist

When should the wrists roll? NEVER! Look at this video of Cabrera and tell me when his wrists roll. Look at videos of the best MLB hitters. Tell me when their wrists roll....Never or long after the ball is gone. http://youtu.be/ebOEn-UumJg

    Swing Progress...

The game video of her home run is helpful. Great swing! Interesting that she "loads" during her practice swing. Even though she is a power hitter, she us sacrificing power and consistency with the no-load mechanics. Have someone measure her bat speed with and without the load. I think you will...

    Batted Ball Distance

I'm late to the game with this discussion, but here is my opinion. If Hitter #2 indeed has bat speed of 70+ mph, then she is likely finishing her swing properly (high and away from her body). Hitters with low bat speed for their age/level typically have poor bat paths before and after contact...

10U DD Swings from Monday's BP Session

Your daughter's swing looks good for her age...fluid and natural. More "leverage" will enable her to hit more line drives. Simply stated, her body position is too upright before and at impact with the ball. She is also very close to actually leaning forward at impact, which would explain all the...

    Specific drills for lowering hands

"Extensor actions"...hmmmmm. I have a simple drill that works wonders for hitters who drop their hands. Have your daughter get in her set-up position and have her drop the barrel of the bat on her arm (not her shoulder). Try to have her keep it there as long as possible during the swing...

Sierra Romero ... "I rely on my hands".

Is this a trick question? I believe you started this thread with a quote from Romero.... I'm not sure why every time I post something, you take a shot at me. Whether you agree with my hitting philosophy or not, I have tried to make a positive contribution to the this great site. I have yet to...

Sierra Romero ... "I rely on my hands".

Romero may think she is "relying on her hands", but the videos show that she uses her entire body to hit. Look closely at the videos and you will see that her wrist barely break. Her power comes from her strong lower body movement, her great extension at impact, and her long and powerful finish.

    Hitting Advice - college freshman

Here are a few adjustments that will help increase her bat speed/power: 1) Her hands are too close to her body at set-up and throughout the swing. All of my hitters and the three hitters above, including Andre Ethier, all get their hands back toward the catcher before the upper body rotates...
