    Who catches pitching lessons?

I catch about half my students. The other half I jump in occasionally just to get another perspective. I have a video replay set-up I use when I need it, but now that I'm catching somebody almost every day I've become fairly good at seeing flaws from my stool. Sometimes I have a parent film...

Fielders choice leads to stolen base. Can someone explain this play to me?

Yes, the ball is in the circle and the runner is committed to 1st. The pitcher is just standing in the circle not faking a throw or anything. It's called the "look-back" but she doesn't actually have to "look."

Fielders choice leads to stolen base. Can someone explain this play to me?

Agree - if she went "immediately" it would be ok, but she really stretched it. Also looked to be across the foul line which might also commit her to first. Ball is in the circle too, so might the look back rule take effect? She's strolling back to first and stops then heads to 2nd. Out?

    Rothrock's Grip

Which is kind of my point…we mostly see the replays of the 1% of the 1% — my students should certainly look up to them, but when when she’s cruising at 57 MPH in 16U I’m going to teach her how to MOVE it and change speeds because that’s how she’s going to win.

    Rothrock's Grip

I’d say the fastest do tend toward bullet and the slower girls tend to be really good at location and movement. We’re not talking absolutes here, there’s girls all over the place including fast girls who can spin it and slow girls who can’t…you won’t find the latter on ESPN though! Occasionally...

    Rothrock's Grip

When watching college on TV you need to understand you're looking at the top in velocity as well as the best of the best in location etc. I wouldn't worry about spin/movement as much* with my students if they were throwing upper 60's either. My fastest kid is cruising 61/62 so yeah, spin axis...

Placement of foot in front of the rubber

My kids do this on turf...Plenty of push and 6" closer, LOL. Much harder to do on dirt with the hole in front. I think only USSSA says the foot must be "on" the rubber. The rest say "in contact with." I could be wrong which rule set says "on." I'm pretty sure I got the idea from @Hillhouse...

    POLL~ on this pitchers reaction

Agree - she's sending the ball to 1st to go around the horn.

    Leaping? Or replanting?

Show what’s ILLEGAL for the love of…I have a girl who does a bit of a crow hop and currently I discourage it and will continue to until the NCAA takes a stance. They’ll have to address it as soon as those girls start showing up en masse. Not the Barnhill style hop…this stuff now is literally a...

    8 year pitcher eval

Honestly...time to just keep up with her practices and have some fun. She'll get bigger and stronger and then there's that whole puberty thing to deal with so you'll have plenty to work on soon enough. Also the jump to the bigger ball - start that as soon as you can. It can be a tough one for...

    Becoming a pitcher only?

From my DD: “of course I want to hit, but if 9/10 other people on the team are better, then ok, I’ll just pitch.” She bats in HS. She bats in pool play. In the bracket she pitches. She’s off to college in the fall and I quote her again: “if 9 other girls hit better then I do, then we’re going...

    Correcting pitcher during game

The OP said she does things mostly right at home. If true the first piece of advice I’d relay from my DDs first PC; “Pitchers have to pitch.” How much is up for debate. My standard advice is don’t go 3 days without pitching. That’s a minimum of 2-3 times a week and if you figure 100+ throws...

Dad with some questions about my new pitcher?

Yeah, when you get 30…maybe 40 good minutes, once every week or two, proper spin axis is low on the list. Often times once all the major body control issues are corrected, I find spin takes care of itself. Once we get them to adhere to the I/R absolutes we can start making them aware of spin...
